I would do what they do here and have been doing since day cares re-opened back in June.

The staff members concerned wear the masks that actually do something, We must be doing something right, because we haven't had a single case here in weeks, not one, and masks only became mandatory in public places on July 31st. Pretty much all the cases found are in one care home or in people who travelled and brought it back.

We keep hearing about "a second wave" here- I know it's hit some places, but not here.

Ok, second wave is part of the equation too:  It has started where I am and we're holding on by our fingernails to not fall into the same hole as our neighbouring state.    Also, the staff members don't want to take the risk of being near people who can't manage their germ spread without masks.

So what do you do when managing his program?

For the record, we got to zero cases without masks too.  Then it came back.

This was me a month ago. We went for several weeks with no new cases, we were one day away from actually having no active cases.

And then, some people travelled to another province and it started in the Hutterite colonies. And now, I believe the cluster in one community is at 68+ after someone travelled from eastern Canada and didn’t self isolate “properly.” (These are the words of public health). Numbers have slowly and some days, not so slowly, increased to the point that our cases exceed what we had in the spring.

Second wave? I thought we were going to be lucky and avoid the worst, but not anymore...

The staff wear the masks that work, so they will be safe. If a parnet is that concerned about their son or daughter getting sick because someone elses child can't wear a mask, they have the option to home school them. There's resources available for that here.

The staff have a legal right to a safe workplace and because some cannot manage their spray/social distancing the staff will not work without everyone wearing masks - after all, masks are only part of the equation for staying safe.   The child who can't attend because they aren't given a safe environment is being discriminated against.    Also, this isn't school - it's a disability day program.  There are no resources available for home.

How do you manage this?

I think the upshot is that there is no perfect answer.  Whatever we do, some experience discrimination.

According to Stats Can, one if five people identifies as having a disability (about 7 million). If even one tenth of those can't wear a mask, then that's at least 700,000 people who will be facing this issue, at least here.

This is the question we are all asking now basil. Our schools are going back in a few weeks, and the plans are sketchy. There was a big article on the CBC website this morning - parents of children with disabilities would feel they are being discriminated against and not included in the planning for return to school. There are no easy answers...

Our summer camp for children with disabilities did go forward and children have been attending in smaller cohorts. They don’t always wear masks, but staff do.

There is no disability which should take priority over another disability.   All we can do is the best we can within the systems which we have.  Unfortunately, no matter which way it goes someone is going to be discriminated against.

The whole schooling thing is so tough.  We've got one school which is the source of a cluster.    The little kids don't shed much, but teenagers are little different to adults.

Our year 12 final exams start in 8 weeks and the government is begging any child who has the slightest sniffle to stay home and file a 'misadventure' report.   I can imagine the kids who aren't academic doing this, but I bet the kids who've worked their whole lives for their university entry mark are going to take flu meds, put on a mask and go do their exams without telling anyone they are unwell.
