ironpony
I've been having insomnia for a while and I found out the cause. I noticed on nights when me and my gf do not have sex, I can sleep for the most part and do not have insomnia. But on the nights we do, which is a lot more, I have insomnia for pretty much the whole night almost. I did tests and we decided to get up earlier in the morning and have it then, before work, if we wanted to. I sleep much better now. And sometimes we say to each other, it's early evening only still, let's have sex in the even if we feel like it, and see if anything happens, and yes, insomnia every time we do for me. However, it's not as enjoyable to do it in the morning since we are just waking up and have to keep our eye on the clock before work, and possibly do it in more of a hurry then. So is it normal to get insomnia from sex in the evening, even if it's early evening? I did some research on it, and all I could find is that guys sleep better from sex, and couldn't find it actually causing insomnia. Even my gf gets sleepy after, so she might not like doing it in the morning as much before work therefore, but not sure, I can ask. But what do you think, is this normal? And why did this happen to me now, since I didn't have problems with this, when I was younger?
preraph
I guess everyone is different. Men I knew often fell right to sleep after sex, and that's probably more common, but maybe you get your metabolism up and also are kind of excited just in general about having sex or something. As long as you're managing to get sleep, I wouldn't sweat it.

Author ironpony
But I'm not managing to get sleep, it's causing insomnia for me, and I don't like having sex in the morning, cause trying to do it when you are just getting up is satisfactory for either of us really. alphamale
what happens when you jack off and the ball-and-chain isn't around? how do you sleep then?
Author ironpony
Same, still insomnia. A lot of times I pre-mature ejaculate unintentionally before I reach orgasm though. Could this possibly be why, as maybe you don't get sleepy till after orgasm, and maybe premature ejaculation has an opposite effect, since you didn't get to use up that sexual energy that was built up? Or maybe I'm wrong, and that was just a hunch? Edited May 28, 2019 by ironpony
vanhalenfan
Take some Melatonin after sex and you'll be good ...No need for time-constrained early morning sex...The worst kind in my book (coming from a night owl).
alphamale
I don't know ironpony but if it is really bad you may want to see your general pratictioner

alphamale
Okay thanks, but I've tried Melatonin already quite a few times, and all it does it make me more tired. sounds like a temporary problem that may be fixed by getting an Rx for some sleeping meds
Author ironpony
Yeah maybe I should it's just others I know who were on them, said don't do them as they just make you really tired throughout the day, more tired then if you didn't sleep even. Is that true if anyone knows?

Author ironpony
Okay thanks, but will it make me tired at work the next day, and make it harder to work like melatonin did?
preraph
Have you tried Benadryl or the generic? It's for hay fever, but it really helps you sleep and it only stays effective about 5-6 hours, so you're not groggy. Take it about 30 minutes before you want to sleep. Usually the dose is two 25 mil. tablets (so 50 mil), but you might only need one, so first try one.
alphamale
Okay thanks, but will it make me tired at work the next day, and make it harder to work like melatonin did? the newer Rx sleeping pills have minimal side effects. take a half dose if you are worried about work the next day and see how it goes
mark clemson
A nurse practitioner suggested I not use Benadryl daily long term. Not sure why as it's OTC, but she didn't want me to. She had me stick with melatonin. Sex and masturbation used to make me sleepy. Now it seems they don't anymore. Not sure what's changed - maybe just my natural melatonin production. preraph
^ It could dry you out (dehydrate) over the long term, I imagine, but I doubt he has sex every day, so shouldn't be a problem.
Els
I get sleepy, but if I push myself through the sleepiness (i.e. to stay awake because it's early evening) I might get a "second wind" and insomnia afterwards. It's mostly the orgasm that causes it, not the sex per se. Given that you have trouble orgasming anyway, maybe make weekday sex all about her, and get yours on weekends? A nurse practitioner suggested I not use Benadryl daily long term. Not sure why as it's OTC, but she didn't want me to. She had me stick with melatonin. You can't use them long term, anyway. Benadryl (like most sedating antihistamines) stops working after a VERY short period of recurring use - usually only works for 4 nights tops for me. Then after that you have difficulty sleeping for the next 4... Ambien and the other Z-drugs work for much longer, although they can cause rebound/withdrawal symptoms as well.
Eternal Sunshine
Ambien and other Z pills are IT. I had to struggle with terrible insomnia and they have solved all my problems. No more insomnia, sleeping like a baby on long haul flights and NO jetleg (since I can take me at any time and fall asleep). I know that people advise against using them long term, but I have used them for years and never had to increase the dosage. Sure, I am probably addicted at this stage, but my quality of life is SO much better, it's worth it. I now get to feel rested every day As for sleepiness the next day - none at all. Ambien is out of your system in 4 hours.

I agree that there isn't much of a negative effect as long as you stick to the stipulated dose. There can be some withdrawal if you go off it, but tapering off works just fine. I think the biggest issue is just that it's so hard to get - which always struck me as bizarre given that far more addictive stuff is freely purchasable from regular stores.

I have a doctor colleague that used to work with me long time ago. He writes scripts as long as I don't take more than 1 per day. Otherwise, they would be impossible to get. BTW he fully agrees with me about these pills being low risk and thinks that sleep deprivation is more harmful to the body.
