Can my job make me do extra duties, I have not done before without extra pay?

Recommended Posts

I am not a salaried employee, I am on a wage per hour. My bosses expect me to do these extra tasks I've never done before on afternoon shift, which I don't want. I work 2 rotating shift and now they are expecting me to do more duties and afternoon shift for the same amount of money I already make.

We have a new manager who just started who is getting paid more than me, I am female so maybe that's why. He is in charge of the whole shift when the supervisors not there he gets supervisor rates whereas I don't.

I have stated several times I'm not interested in afternoon shift. I am really pissed off. I am one of the best workers there, I basically run everything, I'm good at multitasking, I'm not lazy.

What should I do?? What would you do?? I'm thinking of talking to the union i am in.

If you are a member of a union then that is the place to find your answers as to what they can or cannot do.

You don't say where you're located, but in the US labor laws vary by state. Many states have employment at will, which means either party can end the relationship if they aren't happy... more specifically, employers can fire people without a good reason, or any reason. Unions can provide a buffer, but many are weak and ineffective. So it really depends on the specifics. What they're doing does't sound right, but your recourse is unknown. Talk to the union rep.

Definitely get advice from your union rep and ensure you have a record of any contracts/documents/papers/policies you have signed or agreed to.

No they can't!! I just found out after underpaying me once they are trying to underpay me again. I have an agreement that states it. I need more pay to do what they want. Thanks
