MsJayne
Last night my partner and I were discussing why he can't stand a particular friend of mine, (she's a Know-All, a One-Upper, and an Interrupter), and the subject of off-putting personality traits came up. I'm interested to hear which traits bug other people to the point that they can't stand being around someone. Specifically talking about adults, which are the most off-putting traits in friends and acquaintances? Feel free to add to the list. The Know-All - The person who thinks they’re a Professor of Everything and will hold forth on any topic with such apparent confidence that it suggests that they actually know what they’re talking about, often spreading misinformation. The One-Upper - No matter what you’ve done, they’ve done it bigger, better, and more often. If you’ve just arrived home from a world cruise they’ve just come back from the moon, and so on and so forth. The Bossy Boots - The person who thinks they’re more capable and efficient than the rest of the human population. They dish out orders like everyone’s on their payroll. The Bully - Has no problem insulting other people, or being argumentative and making everyone uncomfortable. Gives off a vibe which says, “Disagree with me at your own peril”. The Competitor - A close relative of the One-Upper, the competitor is often in debt up to their eyeballs, such is their relentless quest to feel superior to their contemporaries via possessions. You can feel them measuring themselves against you and tell by their demeanour whether they’re satisfied with the results of their weigh-in. The Prude - This person has never committed a sin in their life, (that we know of). They have an air of disapproval wafting about them that a suggests they’ve never used a swear word or even gone a km over the speed limit. They’re smugly tolerant of inferior beings who refuse to join the Goody-Two-Shoes Club and probably say a prayer asking for forgiveness if they engage in fornication. The Interrupter - Loves the sound of their own voice, and thinks everyone else does too. They talk over other people and are blissfully unaware that they're actually a party-killing bore.
major_merrick
I can put up with a lot from a friend....I have my own vices, after all. But I dislike bossy people. Unless you've earned the right to tell me to do something....don't. Ask, but don't boss me. I don't long suffer the company of people who think they can order me around. I would add to the list the "Overly Erudite." This person has always read the latest article, the latest study, has tons of degrees on the wall, and generally thinks they are a superior person for it. If they don't have a career in academia, they idolize those who do. Perhaps this person is a sub-type of the "Know All" but with a particular emphasis on being considered educated, expert, credible, etc... The Overly Erudite individual will often look down on tradespeople and those who succeed by common sense and working with their hands. If I run into an Overly Erudite, I frequently wish for them substantial failure of their vehicle or their plumbing. Its always nice to see them pay a hefty bill to somebody who gets dirty for a living. Also, for your consideration, the "Perpetually Offended." This person can dish it out, but can't take it. God forbid you use the wrong word in a conversation with them. If you tell them what you really think of them, they cry or beg for assistance from some authority. These people are frequent petitioners of schoolteachers (I'm gonna tell on you!), HR at work, moderation online, and the police.

Not sure about over there, but here a plumber can earn a lot more than an academic, which is proof that you can make more $ by digging s--t than you can speaking it
ShyViolet
I'm gonna say the interrupter. I've known a few people who NEVER stop talking. They just ramble on and on and just talk AT you for like an hour, and you can't even get a word in edgewise. It's not even a conversation, it's more like a one-way barrage of words every time you are locked into a "conversation" with them. I cannot stand people like that and I could never be friends with a person like that.
