Ellener
Went to my first indoor event last night, hand sanitiser, face-coverings and temp check at door ( no-touch forehead monitor machine you just stand by ) and it was pre-registration. What was absent was the social distancing, every other row was kept empty but people just meleed about otherwise. Likewise today, we were asked to wear masks as a fire safety inspection happened, the guys made no attempt to social distance though. I thought it was still part of the official Covid 19 infection control measures and just checked and it is, but it seems to have stopped almost overnight.
Fletch Lives
Yeah, I get the impression people are tired of Covid, have relaxed too much. It's not a good situation. The good news is, the vaccine is going to work and this will be over soon.
central
Experts estimate that herd immunity would require around 80-90% of the population to have COVID-19 immunity, either through prior infection or vaccination. That could easily take 9 months, and given how many people will refuse the vaccine, it could take years. I expect social distancing and masks will be needed until sometime in 2022, but things should start to improve by late 2021.
Author Ellener
Thanks @Fletch Lives @central The other pandemics have been two years so I too think by late 2021 we'll be seeing the end. Hope so.
d0nnivain
With masks social distancing is not as mandatory but remains advisable. If people get to close I simply ask them to step back as I do, assuming I have room.
Ruby Slippers
I noticed that after the initial wave and the first attempt at loosening restrictions months ago, people were just as up in my business at the grocery store as ever. Having more of my personal space to myself while doing errands was nice while it lasted.

I am guessing that people are figuring that since that mask wearing is at least good enough, yes? Figured they'd meet half-way. Why social distance, when you're wearing masks. Of course, I am wondering what kind of event is this?

Not mine so I wasn't compelled to interact and we sat on front row. 11 hours ago, Ruby Slippers said: Having more of my personal space to myself while doing errands was nice while it lasted. One thing about the church event- due to Covid they kept it short, sometimes these things are interminable. 👼🏾 I will say the mental uplift of it has improved my physical and mental health since. FMW
6 hours ago, QuietRiot said: Why social distance, when you're wearing masks. Because masks don't provide 100% protection. I only go places I know have established safety protocols, and mostly stay in the City where everyone is compliant with masks and distance. I haven't had any issues with someone getting too close until last weekend at a WalMart store in one of the suburbs. Someone got right behind me in the self checkout line, even though there were clearly marked spacing stickers on the floor. I was so surprised I didn't immediately say anything and within about 5 seconds I was able to move to a self check register and get away from her. Otherwise I would have asked her to please back up. Millennial
In the shops where I live, it's 50/50 people wearing masks to people not. People not being that concerned about social distancing. Think people are a bit fatigued regarding covid.

Yes, not having people practically standing on my heels in check-out queues is one of the few aspects of this year that I've appreciated.

It's reported that there's a new strain of the virus that is more contagious, but less deadly. And there not sure the vaccine works against the new strain I believe. However, it has mutated before and not been more deadly. Also, we could very well see (for example) Covid 26 and Covid 32 down the road. The good news is they seem to have cracked the code for future Covid vaccines, so it won't take too long to get a vaccine out to the public. BaileyB
Where I live, you are not allowed to associate with anyone outside your own home. Items deemed “non-essential” are blocked off in stores, not for purchase. I tried to buy a shower curtain last night because we moved and I needed a shower curtain, and I couldn’t buy it at the store. I will have to order it online. If you are found to be associating with others you should not - in their home or in a group of more than five people who are not from your household, you will be fined. People were fined a few weeks ago for an outdoor, drive in church service. Social distancing is most definitely still a thing here in Canada. I think it’s sad that it’s not a thing in the US, probably contributing to the fact that you are currently adding a million covid positive tests to your total every four days. I understand that people are tired and the hardship is very real, but it kind of astounds me that people are not following basic health recommendations... still, with all we know. More easily transmissable, yes but no evidence that it is more or less deadly. I think the feeling is that it produces the same disease as the "usual" strains, but time will tell. We don't know enough about it yet.

They offer some protection to the wearer and some to others but the virus can go through masks. It is better to wear them than not to reduce the risk. People should still be social distancing and, ideally, not meet at all indoors. Having lost two close family members to Covid this month (December 2020), I can say you cannot take enough precautions. Assume everyone is infectious, assume the virus is hanging in the air in any indoor space, assume you are infectious, assume it is outside in the air if you are near someone or walking behind them, then act accordingly. Wearing masks and social distancing is a minimum for reducing risk. It does not eliminate risk at all.

QuietRiot
Friend of mine got into a verbal altercation with a small potatoes restaurant when he ordered take-out. It was with the manager. Apparently, when he arrived he waited outside as some sloppy looking, scruffy man (maskless), rushed in before him into restaurant. So he and his wife decided to wait until he left the building. Someone came up behind him and asked them why they were waiting...and they said why....so that person decided to wait with them as well (distanced) (No mask rules at the place by the way) Then an employee came out to wave them in,and he said, "No, we'll wait until he leaves first", and he said, "You don't have to wait" and he replied, "Or you could ask the jerk without a mask to leave!" Then a manager came out and ranted about how DeSantis....etc etc etc. Anyways, the scruffy man left, and then he went in and got his food. So sad.
Author Ellener
I think other people/groups picked up on the diminuishing social distancing, we now have a series of tv ads in Texas reinforcing 4 things: hand-washing, face-covering, social distancing and Covid ( also 'flu ) vaccinations. Lisa_Lisa
I don't think social distancing is a thing anymore. I saw some Instagram photos of people in the stands at the Super Bowl; super crowded.
