Yes - why did Doug Emhoff not have to change his name, like Hillary did?

Here's one for you.

In my Province it's illegal to take our husband's name. Since 1981 they made it a law all women keep their maiden name. My mother who married in 1964 had to revert to her maiden name in 1981. Now 40 years later it's rooted deep into our culture and we can't even understand the need or the will to change our last name.

Our first lady Sophie Grégoire, wife of Justin Trudeau,  likes to call herself Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau but it's borrowed not her legal name, it appeals to the English Canadian who continued the tradition of changing last names.

That being said, still in my Province, we are free to give our children the father's last name, the mother's last name or a combination of both names linked with an hyphen. We have an entire generation born in the 80s with mother-father's last name. People stopped doing it after a while when kids needed 32 squares + to write their name like Marie-Antoinette Lafrenière-Tremblay type of name. It helps we don't have middle names.
