Watercolors
So, last week I bought a used car at a car dealership. I gave the finance guy the title and registration to my paid-off car, as a trade in (KBB value very low as a trade in, higher if I'd sold it to someone as a private seller). Since I wasn't financing the used car that I bought, I wrote a check for the total amount. I asked the finance guy several times about giving me the state title and registration and I FOOLISHLY left the lot without having a straight answer. The finance guy had told me that the previous owner had brought in that car only a week prior, which is true as I had been scanning that dealership's website for a few weeks now and didn't see the car until a week ago. So that part is true. What seems unclear to me, is, whether or not this finance guy paid the previous owner for their trade in, and in return, was given the car's state title and registration. Since I need proof of legal ownership, I emailed the finance guy tonight; telling him that if he doesn't give me the title # at least by tomorrow, if he still doesn't physically have the state title, that he is legally required to rescind the car sale and refund me the entire check amount. I could call the local sheriff's office and have them meet me at the car dealership this week, with the paper work I signed to buy the car and explain that the dealership has stolen $___ amount of money from me, and refuses to provide me with my proof of legal ownership to the vehicle. I can also call the county attorney's office, and get them involved so that this dealership will lose their operation license if they don't send me the title asap. While this car dealership has 30 days to actually mail me the title, I don't believe that they will. Did I go overboard with my email to the finance guy at the dealership? I am trying to protect myself here. I love the car that I bought and don't want to return it. But I can't legally drive it without the state title that is proof that I am the new legal owner. I went on message boards earlier today and read story after story of people being screwed out of their due state title by car dealerships.
Alpacalia
What makes you think they won't mail you the title within the 30 days allowed? Legally, they do have 30 days. Did you run a vehicle history report with title and check for any liens? Is it a reputable used car dealership?
Author Watercolors
I emailed the general manager and he called me the next day. He told me that his finance manager and sales guy were both wrong in the way that the treated me. And, he explained that the finance guy was supposed to give me the car registration paperwork to take with me, along with a copy of the car title, which he said is standard. He was very apologetic and asked me to meet him at the dealership, which I did. Neither the finance guy nor the sales guy were there (thank god), but the employee who handles the car titles and liens was, and was very nice to me and gave me all the paperwork I was supposed to have left with last week, in the first place. I seriously think this highlights how women are treated badly at car dealerships; as if we aren't smart enough to be there by ourselves.
