I think I want to have a major overhaul on my personality. I'm quite the nerd --- studied hard when I was a student --- but got some alpha male guys as buddies. I look outwardly shy and reserved. I don't speak a lot out of fear I may get misjudged. But deep inside is someone else. The way you see my posts here --- that's the "unfiltered" version of myself. But if you really know me in person, you wouldn't expect me to say such things. Truth is, though, I'm actually both. And I want my outward appearance to reflect that. I'm thinking of getting a tattoo and an ear piercing. I want to look different but at the same time show that I'm still a nerd at heart.

I wonder if this will attract the right kinds of women. Any thoughts?

This is a bigger problem than whatever else you've got going on. If you think getting a tattoo and earring is going to magically make you charming, outgoing, and desirable, think again. You need to address what's making you shy and fearful of judgment and change that, the rest is just cosmetic.

What's the "right kind of woman"?

Also how does one look shy or reserved?  I understand how one IS shy & reserved or at least acts that way but you lost me on the appearance.

Tattoos are forever.  Chose carefully & think about how it will look when you are 70, especially with saggy or crape-y / wrinkly skin.
