Fleiss Posted May 7, 2021 Share Posted May 7, 2021 (edited) I work at this language center in the evening, where l am paid by session. On April 5, l received the payment for March. After leaving the building l thought that the manager - who also covers the financial stuff - had by mistake paid me 3 classes more than l had in March. (I did 23 and he had paid me for 26). So l returned and told him so. He said he was confused with the calculation system/schedule, and took back the money corresponding to 2 classes —120 minutes. Now, when l got paid today for April’s classes, we mentioned this new calculation system again. But I wasn’t aware at the moment that those 2 classes weren’t transferred to April’s payment either. When l went over everything at home and multiplied the total number of classes taught by the fee per class - January through April - it turned out that the money for those 2 classes is missing. I have the impression that the manager knew all along that he had made no mistake but preferred to keep the money, which is not big, anyway, but l feel a bit disappointed with him. You write that you taught 23 classes in March & were paid for 26 so you returned the money but he only took back the overpayment for 2 classes. Are you now saying that in April you were underpaid by 2 classes? If so, since you already got paid for 1 class you didn't teach in March, April's mistake is depriving you of the money for 1 class. If the manager doesn't understand the system & has now made 2 mistakes you probably need to go over the manager's head to an owner. Another option would be to get the government involved if there is an agency that oversees Wage & Hour issues. Link to post Share on other sites

Yes show him this on Monday, your entitled to get paid fully for what you worked, He was quick to take it back from you, so your perfectly entitled to get what your due. I was confused, too, because the payment should normally only cover dates 1 to 31/1 to 30 of a specific month, not sometimes include or exclude days from the successive month. When you also consider the sessions for April, l taught 25 classes, but in the end - according to the new calculation system - l ended up being paid for 22, not 24! For March & April combined, l got paid for 46 classes, whereas l taught 48. (The center is very small, and l see no point of trying to solve the issue with the ‘big boss’ who hardly ever shows up, nor with other outside entity.) Link to post Share on other sites

To make myself clear enough: while l didn’t want the extra money by mistake, it seems that he isn’t willing to give back what he once took back. This either to keep it for himself, or doesn’t want to sound unprofessional, or both. On the other hand, if I showed him the thorough calculation from January, l wouldn’t want him to take it amiss, which could turn him against me.
