ironpony
In order to live on my own, I need a job that pays a living wage of course, which means I would have to go to school or college, but I don't know what I want to take. How do I find out? I took some programs to help determine what job I want, and some said things like customer service or grocery store, but I tried that and that wasn't a living way pay though. Plus I never felt like I liked those jobs though. Is there any other way to determine what job is good for me that would have that degree of pay? I like the job I have now for example, and find it fulfilling, but it doesn't pay a living wage, but minimum wage. If I ask them to pay me a living wage after working there for a few months now, I don't suppose to they would give it to me? Or what do you think is best? Thanks for any advice on it! I really appreciate it! Edited July 15, 2021 by ironpony
basil67
Is there any state owned housing where you live? Or what about 'affordable housing' programs? This is all aimed at those who have a disability and/or are on a low income.
Author ironpony
Oh I am not sure. I can look into it. I didn't think I would qualify but I can look into it.
clia
What do you consider to be a living wage? You don't necessarily need to go to school if you want to make more money, but you may have to start out at the bottom somewhere and work your way up. You have the Internet at your disposal -- you'll need do some research about different jobs and see what sounds interesting to you. There are tons of websites providing payscale, schooling requirements (or lack thereof), etc. for different types of jobs and quizzes that can help guide you.
Happy Lemming
Did you ever take the SAT test?? If so, what subjects did you score high in?? Many... many... many years ago, when I took the SAT test, I scored very high in math, which pointed me in the direction of accounting. I like numbers and this seemed to "fit the build" for me. Maybe you could look into taking the SAT tests again, especially if you are thinking about college.
glows
Go with your strengths and what you love to do and then turn it into a profession. Be a professional and find the requirements needed for that. You may have to complete multiple programs or required work experience but I think it's possible if you are motivated. Some loves develop over time too. I see a lot of people who are discouraged after six months or a year into a job. It takes a long time to get good, really good, at something. Don't give up.

I scored higher in subjects that did not involve math or science, which were subjects I scored less in. Edited July 15, 2021 by ironpony

Well are you suppose to ask your employer for a raise after a while, which I never did and that's how it works then?

It really depends what kind of job you are doing and whether you deserve a raise. If you are taking on more responsibilities or get promoted, then maybe you deserve a raise. Or maybe your job automatically increases your pay by some percentage each year as you get more seniority. If you are working an entry level job at, for example, retail or fast food, and are just doing the same job for years without any upward movement or added responsibilities, then maybe you don't deserve a raise.

As an example... if you scored high in reading, then maybe a "Proof Reader" or "Copy Editor" or something along those lines. If you did well in a subject, that is a strength (for you) look at jobs where you can utilize that strength. I really appreciate it! Can you talk to your councilor about which jobs you're best suited for? Ask what career training you're eligible for. Perhaps your social worker can give you better information about technical schools and career training. Live at home for now. Your parents don't have a problem at this point. You need better communication with social services and your social worker because eventually you'll have to be more independent. For example, in addition to discussing career training, discuss group homes and other housing situations that you could handle. Edited July 16, 2021 by Wiseman2
elaine567
[ ] As for asking for a raise I think it is highly unlikely to be given as you just recently converted from a temporary position with them to a permanent job. Unless they are finding it difficult to find or keep staff then why would they want to pay you more? Author ironpony
Yeah that's true I see what you mean. Well others said to wait to get promoted, but in past jobs, this has never happened. It's because promotions mean you need a higher education for more positions and they are not going to promote me without it. Unless I am wrong?

Have you been in entry level jobs that provide a path for upward mobility? Some types of jobs have you start out at a certain level and the you automatically move up as you get seniority. Or sometimes you start at entry level, and then a person working above you leaves or gets promoted, so the company looks for someone to fill their now vacant role. If you've done well in your role, you may be able to apply for the promotion and get it. Have you ever applied for a promotion when there has been a vacancy? Whether or not you need higher education for the promotion completely depends on the job. I have no idea what industry you are in or what type of job you are doing and have done in the past, so it's really hard to speak directly to your situation.
Author ironpony
I usually do factory type jobs where higher positions require you to know more. I have applied for higher positions a few times, but they usually went to new people. The companies seem to want to higher help from the outside, rather than promote people who are already there. Maybe they felt I was doing good where I was and if something ain't broke, don't fix it.

You also keep applying for seasonal work and then taking time off to work on movies. You need more assistance than LS can give you. People here are not qualified to help you in a real way but you don’t seem to do anything to get that help. 🤷🏽♀️
Author ironpony
Oh okay, thanks for the input. Well the reason why I apply for seasonal jobs is because the seasonal jobs get back to me with offers more it seems compared to the permanent positions more so, but maybe that's normal? I don't think I book more than the average amount of time off compared to other people. Other people I know book a couple of days off here or there, so I thought I wasn't doing any more than the norm, unless maybe I was? Also if I am not qualified to move up, then should I just go back to school and try to advance into a higher job that way, through education, rather than promotion? Eternal Sunshine
Are you good with your hands or have any interest in trades? Those are the only jobs that pay well without higher education (as far as I know). Anything else, even if you start at an entry level position, someone with a college degree will usually be favoured for a promotion. You can start your own business but this still requires you to become experienced and good at something first.

Since I have went to film school, and have worked on projects that required editing, audio recording, and audio mixing, my friends say I should try to seek out jobs in that, but that is where only temporary jobs come in, rather than something permanent, so I am not sure if that's an option therefore, to get the best cashflow going. glows
Do you have any other interests? Don’t be afraid of hard work or a long road. Plan. It doesn’t matter what you want to be. Just make sure you have enough to be comfortable and live with peace of mind, stability. Strive for that. You may decide that way once you figure out your priorities or the way you want to live. For me it didn’t matter, none of the hard work mattered, as long as I could live with peace of mind and be secure. There’s a lot of freedom in that. Sometimes it’s a winding road figuring that out and others find it a straight path. It’s all good as long as you are happy in the end.
