Phoenix13Nash
I’ve been with X company for 10 months now, and I feel like it’s time for a break. My boss is overworking us with 60+ hour weeks, consecutive days with my only days off being every other weekend. During the 6 months I was part time, I would be considered the employee that would ask “how high” if my employer told me to jump. It was probably a mistake to work as hard giving them overtime and being there on a dime when they asked, because now they expect that. I was recently promoted the seventh month and my family said I should have asked about vacation because we had something planned. I ended up missing out because I was afraid of being judged for a new position and my boss is a little intimidating to approach. What’s sad is now peak season is approaching and I still don’t know who I need to go to request time off. we usually can cover for each other in a pinch but now I want to use actual vacation time. I’m mentally drained, the environment is just toxic (but tolerable to an extent - I just don’t want to be there any longer than I have too) and I just need a real break. I didn’t even get this full weekend off because my boss asked me to cover for him while he went to a friends birthday party. And to me that’s not really fair to have to cover on my weekend off. Wiseman2
10 mos? Don't you get personal days or vacation days yet? Do you get overtime? A job is a legal contract. Read up on the policies there with regard to overtime and paid days off.
ASG
Where I am, you can usually start taking time off after 6 months, so after 10 months, you're definitely entitled at least a few days. Usually it's the HR department that deals with that sort of thing. They check it against other approved holidays within your department, so that not everyone is off at the same time. Sometimes, it can be through your line manager, who then sends the request to HR. Go figure it out! You definitely deserve some time off. A job is not a favour!

It's perfectly reasonable to ask for vacation days, especially after 10 months with a company. You need to figure out what days you want off and ask for them.

Is this in hospitality or retail? Ask for the time off within reason and see what they say. They are assuming that you are available to work and shifts could be in high demand so covering you is not a problem. Put in the request to the person you report to or the manager that schedules.
