Gaeta
I can't pin point why I started having nightmares this past week. They're very disturbing and those images stay in my mind during the day. In my nightmares there is always a baby, that is not mine, that I have to take care of/protect (carry in my arms) and suddenly I am chased by grizzy bears, or murderers, or bad spirits. Then I always find shelter in an old house that is run down, dusty, damp, dark, scary. There is no end to this dream, I walk around that house scared and I wake up.
Happy Lemming
My guess is your OLD apps have manifested themselves as "grizzly bears, murderers and bad spirits". The "baby" is the normal and happy relationship you desire. The damp, dusty, run down old house is the disaster dates (guys reaching up under your dress, trying to extort money, etc), you've been on. Your sub-conscious is dreading this continued cycle, as you just started up a new profile. You did state you were on these apps for 200 dates over a 3 year period before your last long term relationship.
Author Gaeta
That is interesting but those 200 dates that was a long time ago now I met my ex end of 2015 so my 3 years online was from 2012. Wow almost 10 years ago, time flies.
Happy Lemming
Just now, Gaeta said: 10 years ago, time flies. It is possible your subconscious remembers all of that from 10 years ago?? And that string of horrible men that treated you poorly was but a few months ago....
glows
My guess is the baby is your hopeful self and you protecting it is your adult, more mature self. Nightmares are frustrating. I haven't had one since 2019 when I left my marriage. I hope these fade away for you.
Author Gaeta
I don't really get affected by that @Happy Lemming. I bounce back pretty quickly from those. Maybe it's Covid related. I read dreaming of bears means solitude. We're back in confinement here, everything closed, back working from home, no visitors allowed.
poppyfields
Hi G, I've done a bit of research on dreams, and in many cases they do not reflect or are linked to a particular situation currently happening or has happened, but rather to something totally unrelated or even simply a change in attitude or mindset. I just read this in my book of dreams and what they can mean: >>Dreams about bears can symbolize life cycles, endings and new beginnings, death and rebirth. Such dream might reveal going through a period of thinking and wrapping up things and situations in your life, making choices and decisions about some significant life matters.<< Your dream about bad spirits chasing you is actually you chasing away all the recent negativity you've been experiencing as of late.

Reach out to your friends and family, especially your daughter. Catch up with people in your life. See if everyone is doing ok under the new circumstances. That may alleviate some of this anxiety.
Alpacalia
There is something fascinating and enjoyable about dreams. On the other hand, it can sometimes be upsetting. Dreams are still a mystery to us, and we do not know what their biological purpose is. There are frequently new theories that are emerging as a result of this question. There is an association between negative dreams and psychological distress that occurs frequently. But also keep in mind that dreams are a normal part of emotional processing during stressful times. Journaling your dreams can sometimes be helpful too.
Author Gaeta
There was a very stressing situation at work, I was suppose to take on an additional company with 20 employees. I already have a lot on my plate and I'm realizing I've been ignoring the stress/anxiety this was bringning me. Yesterday at the end of the day I was informed they're not going to dump this on my lap, they're going to keep a small admin team there and will do a slow transition later this spring. I didn't have nightmares last night.... Sometimes I'm wishing for a less stressful job., must be the age.
Alpacalia
Do you ever have a dream about your teeth falling out? That seems to be a recurring dream for a lot of people. And then you wake up and check to make sure your teeth are still there and you're like "phewie!" Edited January 18, 2022 by Alpaca

flitzanu
best advice i can give you, think of anything relevant in the dream, objects, people, etc., and think about what they represent to you. aka - "i dreamt of a german shephard" to most people, they could symbolize protection, loyalty, intelligence, danger, viciousness, obedience, warning-impending threat, etc. so, think about how those things in the dream make you feel. namely bears, spirits, the house, the baby. Author Gaeta
I went to a conference on dreams once and apparently it's not what we see that's important but the feelings we're experiencing in the dream.
mark clemson
Did you start taking any new medicines (even OTC ones) recently? I started having nightmares from a specific OTC allergy medicine. Apparently it's a side effect that's recognized but not common enough to be put on the labels. Anyhow I stopped taking it...

Nyquil (hate that stuff) made my dreams feel like a trip. I think it's the decongestant in it. Anyway good dreams are usually floating, surfing, flying, etc. Bad ones are my car, wallet, etc. is missing or a bunch of people I don't know are partying in my house trashing it.

Author Gaeta
There is a new series on Netflix called *Archive*. Half way through the first episode the little girl sees something in the room that, we think, is an evil spirit. I stopped the series right away even before seeing the spirit lol, I said I'm not watching this ...I had my first nightmare with bears that night. If any of you watch that series let me know!

It wasn't Nyquil or Benadryl for me, but yeah if something seems to be disturbing your sleep consider switching to a different OTC med. I haven't gone and looked but (ironically) I think both those include meds that typically help people fall asleep. However everyone is different and ultimately there are variances in personal biochemistry, so stuff can sometimes affect you not as expected. (Hence there's a lot of variability in side effects.)

Last night I had a beautiful dream of walking on a long beach, the sun was high and bright, and I was taking in all that beautiful scenery. Then I got to a beautiful house, it was my home. Lots of boxes had been delivered and my youngest daughter was opening them with an exacto and I said to her: what out with that knife, those boxes have babies in them. haha, what's with the babies eh!
