I wouldn't expect him to contribute to your share, but did you try to negotiate a holiday which you could afford?   If you tried to compromise to something which was affordable for you both and he's gone ahead in booking this holiday, it shows him as being rather selfish.

This. OP, you need to stop fooling yourself into thinking this time will be better. 

Plan something else for the holidays instead, so you can still enjoy yourself and not tormet yourself with thoughts of him on a hot beach slamming cocktails without you.

If this is characteristic of your relationship in general, then that's how you will feel. This is a common drawback in on off relationships. 

Living full lives apart but then crash landing back into each other's lives.

Had you either stayed together or moved on to someone more compatible, you would be sipping drinks in the sun with that person rather than standing by looking on from a distance at someone who made plans and will have fun that doesn't include you.
