Mentally recover after layoff

Recommended Posts

I'm being laid off, and my last day is tomorrow. I've been struggling for a while due to the fact that my role was poorly laid out (and in hindsight, they probably should have continued outsourcing it instead of hiring in-house) for a while now. Despite the fact that I've gotten a number of interviews already due to seeing the writing on the wall for a while, being paid for all of May with EI kicking in afterwards if I don't get anything and the feeling of relief in being out of a bad situation, the feeling of a layoff still stings.

Any advice on being able to keep my head up?

Layoffs are so common don’t let it make you feel less-than in anyway. I have been laid off before, and one time many years ago fired without cause or warning and that was truly shocking. I found a much better job at a much better company in just a few weeks after that humbling and horrible experience and you will too.
(The firing co in my case failed less a few months after I departed and I was so glad I got out when I did).

Companies by and large (in the U.S.) treat people like they are disposable - not all orgs do this but the reality is that no one is irreplaceable. I know it hurts but you have interviews lined up and will likely be much happier when you find a better fit.

As they say, one door closes and another opens. Good luck.

Tune up your resume and LinkedIn  profile. Maybe you'll find a position you like much better. Try to weather the storm, it's temporary until you find something else. Stay in touch with coworkers and network.

Have you contacted any "head hunter(s)" (recruiters) about placing you??

When I worked, I had a GREAT "head hunter".  She had this uncanny ability to know when I was ready for a change and always had the perfect company to place me.
