I don’t want to hurt him without explaining why. On the other hand he may just be keeping up daily contact out of habit or feels obligated. But we chat on and off all day, doesn’t help me trying detach like he seems to have.

Maybe he's also caught in the loop of doing what he thinks you expect but wants to let go.  I agree he knows this wasn't going to last just tell him it's time to end it.

I'm not sure why he would be hurt. He has already detached himself from seeing you or isn't initiating any meet ups.
