Coworkers unhappy with me?

I have my summer job this year as a job coach.  I am working for the same company that I was last year.  I am ... Not sure about my standing with them.

Last summer, I was training teenagers to work a retail job at a pet shop.  The first one was lousy, when his time was done we were DONE in all caps and that was that.  The second was a good worker, so good that they offered him a job and he took it at the end of the session.  I popped by the store and he was still working there according to others, I was happy about it for him and reported it back to my boss.

This year?  I am not sure.  I was supposed to go back to the pet shop (same location) and they said they didn't want me back there.  So my boss made me a floater - I will be working one week at one place, one at the next, etc.  I was at a pizza shop for the first week.  I chatted with a few employees here and there, otherwise we didn't have much of a relationship other than business.  My client was a good guy, the problem with him is that he would wander off if you were having a conversation with him about something business or personal.  He needed someone to call his attention back to the task at hand at all times.  My boss just gave me a call and said the other employees at the pizza shop thought I was too hard on him and that I was pushy with them.  I asked what the situation(s) were that they thought I was doing this with him, but she didn't know.   I was even careful to ask the manager if it was okay that I put my things down in the office next to his desk or to use the office to make a phone call / take my notes in it because you never know what it is people can and will find offensive anymore.  He said he understood and that was that.

I am not sure of my standing there.  Should I move on after this summer and look for other summer work?  I fear this how others perceive me anymore.

Although one never knows, it can be easy to read too much in to minor issues.

It's ALSO true that it generally doesn't hurt to look into switching jobs if one isn't sure how well one is appreciated (or compensated), and the new job would be a step up.

If you are looking for opinions, I say look for other summer work.  Once, I've been "talked to" or "corrected" or "written-up" or whatever term you want to use, I start looking for a new job.

I've found that most companies will use that one item in my reviews, etc (time and time again).  They'll use it as an example of my "poor attitude" or "unwillingness to be a 'team player'", etc. etc.  They'll pick at that scab over and over again using it to their advantage.  No matter what I do after that reprimand, my work will never be good enough.

No thank you... I'll just move on to a new place.  I really don't need to wait for the other shoe to drop.

Some employment opportunities are a good fit, while others are not.

Do you think it was your tone that was sharp or were you getting frustrated with this particular person?

Keep your distance either way (if you intend to keep this summer gig). Try not to get too involved in the outcome of the situation and have a series of steps or protocol that you follow in the training process, stick with it. If the person doesn't make it or fails/doesn't get hired, it's not on you. You can only do what you're hired to do and not force anyone to succeed especially if they're not cut out for that job.

Just to follow up, I had a final meeting with my boss.  I had to drop off some paperwork to her for the final client, so we met at a McDonald's nearby.  I asked her tacky question but will I have a job with you next summer?  And she said "Oh yes, you will".  I said I was a bit surprised as I got the impression that the last client had made me look bad, but she said she was on my side not hers.  Good to know.
