How the Heck did this happen?!

Ok I will try to keep a very long story short. But first a little background: I have always been the blacksheep of the family, I could never do anything right and everything was always my fault, blah, blah, blah. Suddenly - I am the one everyone turns to to solve any and all problems!

I'll ask it again - how the heck did this happen?!

Recently my mother was in the hospital - did my brother, the doctor, help out and take charge? Hell no! He did everything in his power to alienate every doctor so they refused to speak to him. Did my father, her husband, do anything? No he turned into a blithering idiot. I was left to do everything - this meant speaking to every single doctor and ultimately decide the course of treatment.

Next - my brother (still the doctor) has decided he is going to just quit his job (actually more like a trainning program - he's in a fellowship) - so it is my job to talk him out of it, prevent him from making a big mistake etc.

Please keep in mind, my parents are both very young - not old and senile - so I really don't understand. I just cannot begin to understand how I went from being crap to being responsible for EVERYONE.

I'm tired!

It's unfortunate that your mother had to be in the hospital ( and I do hope she's doing okay now ) but it has been your time to shine and show what you can do under a great deal of stress. This should bring about some changes in some attitudes - a new found sense of respect.

Thanks for your kind words - and yes thank goodness she is fine now.

To be honest I have never respected my parents, or anything they stand for, so earning their respect is pretty meaningless to me.

Regardless I really apperciate your kind thoughts.

You're the 'black sheep' because you are independent and spunky - they know that when you want action taken, you'll see it's taken.

Curious;

I was in the midst of a similar situation in the spring. My father was admitted to the hospital (he's ok now, by the way) with the symptoms of appendicitis. Hey, even I knew what it was, and I told the docs my opinion. Now, I wouldn't actually expect them to listen to me because I'm not trained, but there's nothing mysterious about appendicitis.

It's pretty basic stuff.

One would think so, anyway.

The doctors and nurses and other staff did nothing except gorge him with antibiotics for over three days, until *finally* one doc took the bull by the horns and performed emergency surgery.

It was too late. The appendix had ruptured and poison was leaking into his system.

A long list of complications followed, which meant very difficult time for the family and very expensive time in the hospital. Most of my family were obsequious to the all-knowing and all-seeing physicians, but I was a real painintheass to them. I wanted to know what was going on, why, the schedules for his treatment and all the rest. It caused a tremendous amount of tension within the family (some of which still exists to this day), but I have no doubt whatsoever that had I not been there dogging the doctors' and nurses' collective asses, my father would have died.
