Poll: how much junk food do you eat?

Recommended Posts

I find myself craving sweets lately and eating something bad for me every day. I used to hardly eat junk food at all, maybe a couple times a month, but now I'm worried that this will develop into a habit. So I have a few questions:

How often do you eat junk food? And when you do eat, how much do you eat at a time? I usually eat about 100-200 calories worth of sweets a day. For some reason salty snacks like chips don't appeal to me as much.

100-200 calories of sweets isn't bad as long as you include it in your daily allotment of calories. I usually have a bit of chocolate or a couple of cookies every day and I've never been overweight. Sweets for the most part aren't that bad for you. It's fatty junk that's really not good and keep away from trans fats if you can.

100-200 kcal a day???

100 g of most junk sweet stuff contain at least 500 kcal. So it's like a little piece of chocolate or two bites of a cake for the whole day! Are you sure it's this little?

Positive. A good weekly guideline for dark chocolate (>70% cocoa) is 200g max.

As Outcast says, avoid the trans fats like the plague.

I have what one may consider "junk food" two to three times a day. But I've tried to lessen the damage of my junk food by making substitutions. I just make sure that 1) I eat healthier, lower-calorie versions of the real thing and 2) I factor their calories into my daily intake:

-I have potato chips with my sandwich at lunch a few days a week. However, I have sweet potato chips or Baked Lays potato chips--fewer calories, less fat, more nutrition overall.

-I have sweets two to three times a day for my snacks. However, I eat sugar-free Jello and Jello pudding, 1 square of dark chocolate, a yogurt-banana-frozen fruit smoothie, almonds, PBJ on one slice of wheat bread, or Frosted mini-wheats cereal. I factor their calories (about 50 to 250 each) into my daily intake.

-I'll have low-fat ice cream or a home-made oatmeal cookie or a slice of homemade cake (that uses applesauce instead of half the butter and only about 2/3 the sugar in the recipe) for dessert after my meal.

I've lost 24 pounds so far with only five more pounds to go, so I don't think my junk food addiction has hurt me too much!

Agree with the trans fats avoidance. A little bit of dark chocolate is good for you...antioxidants and all.

Yum, I have the capacity to eat lots of junk food... and this coming from a health food nut... imagine if I wasn't such a nut, I would be consuming junkfood in epic proportions... I am trying to lose 5 pounds right now, though, so I am not eating much at all since my calories are too precious to waste... though today I am going out to study at the coffee house so I set aside some cals for some fancy espresso drink....

I eat more junk food when I am happy cuz I go into hedonism mode... a little bit for self medication when I am sad, but happy makes me eat a lot more...

Also, my BF eats SOOOOO much junkfood... I have seen him eat like 6 choco bars in one day... but he is 6'3" and 165 lbs so I think he just has a really really fast metabolism.... lucky..... When we are together though, it is bad! Our favorite is these giant maple bars shaped like gingerbread men at Sluy's bakery in Poulsbo.... had a serious addiction this summer!

Let's see. I eat Mcdonalds about 3 times a week. I have no arteries left. I love chips and cookies and crap galore. It will catch up to me eventully. My metabolism is fast so once its slows....I'll be about 400lbs. Right now i'm at a good 130. As long as I stay there until I turn 25...I'll be good.

Yeah, I always buy my junk food in small packages or else I'll finish everything really fast. For example I buy these soy ice cream sandwiches at Whole Foods call Lil Buddies and they are only 150 calories each. Or I buy small pastries at the Asian stores since they use healthier ingredients. I bought these small japanese red bean cakes the other day and it was only 100 calories each.

Anyway, the calories are not what I'm worried about the most. I've heard that if you have too much sugar and caffeine your body tends to distribute more fat around your waist. Has anyone heard of that?

I have one gigantic sweet tooth. Candy, chocolate, cookies, you name it. I eat it all. I never keep track of my calorie intake. Pretty much everyday I will eat at least one thing that can be classified as junk food. i can't contain myself. Good thing that I have a physically demanding job, or else I would have one hell of a tummy. They are all just so damn good. I don't eat too many salts either. Chips are boring to me.

It's cortisol, the stress hormone, that deposits fat around your waist. Coffee can trigger your body to release cortisol, so don't drink heaps and heaps of coffee. Several studies showed that people who drink milk regularly don't deposit fat in the abdomen the way people who don't drink milk do. They aren't sure exactly why; they think it might have something to do with calcium blocking the fat deposit process.

I've tried and failed to give up sugar several times. I even got through the withdrawal period...but then, a special occasion would come up and I was right back into it.

I salute you! I simply couldn't do it.

I eat much of my sweets early morning and late at night. My bf thinks I am a gluttin. I bought a box of ice-cream bars and ate (8) in one day.. 3 for breakfast..2 for lunch and 3 for dinner. I had a few healthy snacks inbetween.:D

I am not heavy..about 105lbs and 5'2 ..My junkfood habit is very hard of my teeth. I have had numerous root canals...*shivers* I can't help it. I am addicted. My sister thinks I made a deal with the devil to eat all the junkfood I can and not gain weight..lol

It is because I am small..I can feel the rush or the *high* eating junkfood gives me. When I crash it is bad. I begin to tremble, sweat and feel faint. That means eat something sweet FAST! Yes, you can become addicted. The cons are weight gain and bad teeth. I find myself constantly brushing my teeth. I also only drink diet drinks after I brush my teeth before bed.

Once you start eating healthy on a regular basis the cravings for junk food diminish fast!

A couple choclate bars a week aint bad at all, just eat the crap food in moderation.

RR – yes, I have to say that this has had a positive

affect on me health wise. It really helped me in regards

to my dietary vegan journey as well (I had tried the

vegan thing a couple of time – been a veg for about 20

years now) in that I didn’t get that “Odd” vegan look and

lethargy that always seemed to rear its head when I had tried

before.

What amazed and still amazes me are the number of things

that have sugar in them – lots of things that from cooking

more I have come to discover are not needed (take pasta

sauce as an example).

I am personally terrible when it comes to moderation

but think that it really seems the best route for most

people (I may practice abstinence in various areas of

my life, but tend to dislike folks that preach it) .

And Sophia, I know what you mean – in my case

coffee and cigs (I insert this comment to dispel any

thoughts in regards to folks thinking that I am a

bloody monk or something):).

This topic has been a big one with me. I have tried to change my eating habits but fail miserable. Life is just to fast and busy to stop and eat healthy.

Every week at some point this is what I consume I don't know the calorie intake but some of you probaly could figure it out.

Every day I have one cup of folgers coffee with International Delight creamer (Ameretto flavor).

I typically eat for breakfast one of these:

Cranberry Bagel (fresh from bagel shop) w/brummel and brown yogurt spread (strawberry)

Donut-Usually a sugar or glazed twist

McDonalds-Bacon, egg, cheese McGriddle

Orange roll (frozen-make at home)

I'll sometimes eat a few small tootsie roll bites, Bit-O-Honeys, carmel squares or a tootsie roll pop for a burst of energy.

I drink sometimes one can of Mountain Dew before 1pm and sometimes put down 1 bottle of water by then too.

For lunch I typically go to one of these places for food and get one of the following:

Arbys-Market Fresh Ham-no mustard or a regular roast beef with melted cheddar.

McDonalds-Ceasar Salad with grilled chicken, Cheezeburger no mustard, fruit and walnut salad

LeeAnn Chin-Lemon Chicken with Fried Rice

Burger King- Garden Salad with Italian dressing, Whopper Jr w/cheese

Jimmy Johns-Ham sub

Lou's Chow Mein- Chicken Cashew with Extra Cashews

Supper I typically cook a home cooked meal. Nothing out of a box or bag unless its like for a side dish like Rice-a-Roni.

Pork ribs, chops, roasts, Beef roasts, Steak, Shrimp, Tilapia, Turkey breasts, Chicken Thighs, I always have some kind of side with a vegie, The sides are baked, mashed or fried potatos or I will make homemade Spanish Rice, for vegie its typically- whole corn, french style green beans, fresh broiled asparagus or brussel sprouts cooked in butter..

I take suppliments everyday advised by the Herbalist.. I am suppose to eliminate refined sugar and all sources of any kind of sugar from my diet and no more bread or starch products. How am I suppose to do that when my whole life has been potato's, rice, sugar sugar and more sugar.

I eat like a midwestern northern minnesota girl. A mix of city and country. Fast food and Home cooked food.

Mixed in plenty of junk food (not meaning Potato chips, candy but referring to processed foods)

Greetings Pad... ahh, if I may ask in regards to your

herbalists recommendations, for what reason are they

asking you to do this?

My SO (a sugar fiend and carnivore) was put on a

similar diet by a nutritionist for a short period of

time and as such I may have some recommendations

for you. Oh, and no bread – would that have to do with

the yeast or the wheat content in the bread?

hmmm – I actually have more questions that would most

likely drift this topic further off subject. How about a new

topic on this, Padameckla?
