Part time work + study

Recommended Posts

I'm working 20 hours a week as well as studying full time at the moment, partly out of necessity and partly because recruiters from large companies that have come to my campus have made it clear that students that have shown they can work as well as study have a distinct advantage. Many of these companies have said only an average GPA is the minimum. I applied to many of these places earlier in the year for summer internships, but got bugger all out of that. So I learnt that very high marks do not guarantee you a job. Thats why I took the part time job I have at the moment.

My problem is, is that up till now I've had a very high GPA, but it will not be as high this semester due to the part time job. Has anyone been able to keep up a high GPA, as well as work 20 hours a week or is this a rediculous amount to try and keep doing? I'm thinking of doing post grad study next year, for which you need good marks, but if I quit my job and focus mostly on study again it will probably appear to any companies I apply to work at, that I can't handle multiple things at once and that I can't manage my time.

Maybe they will look at it as that you like to focus on one thing and excell at that.

I, personally, do not think that not working while in college will set you up for a denial with decent companies.

I work full time and go to school full time. My GPA is 3.9. I don't work because of my future employment, I work because I have bills ;)

Also, how 'bad' is your GPA gonna be this semester? Is it bad enough for you to feel like you can't keep up?

It's rough as hell! It's doable though. Everything is NOT about GPA. It's about bei well-rounded. The job experience will help you go along way as well as paying your bills. lol

School won't last forever, just work on time managment. If you plan on going to law or med school I suggest you NOT work as you NEED a high GPA and be well rounded. For every other grad school program or professional work, being well rounded is more important than an excellent GPA. Keep about a 3.0 if you can.

Wow slopply you must be a genius to be able to miss all or most of your classes and have a GPA of 3.9.

Thanks for the reply submart, its nice to know someone else thinks 20 hours is tough to do with full time time study. But yeah I agree it's achievable, but I don't have a lot of time for other things. :(

I work two part-time jobs, totalling eighteen to twenty-five hours per week, depending on my schedule for college. I have also been able to maintain a high GPA the past few semesters in college, attending as a full-time student. In fact, I was recently inducted into a national honors society.

Be sure to place school first, and try to find work at your university if possible. One of my jobs is as a student technical assistant for my school, where I essentially get paid to study and do homework. The only work I do is keeping the computer lab fully stocked with supplies, and addressing any computer issues which arise when I cover classes.

Do not try to do too much. If you feel that you can only afford ten hours each week for a part-time job, then try to find an employer who is very lenient. If you have no such luck, you may have to sacrifice having "a life" in order to accomplish your goals.

If you find the right job, a place where you enjoy working, you will probably be able to balance your studies just fine. If you find that you simply cannot handle both work and school at the same time, put your education first! I wish you luck. Do not worry if you cannot do everything you think you should; each of us can only do as well as we can!

:(

LOL. I have missed two classes in two years. No genius, just never rested. It's doable if that's what you want, but you need to decide for your self what's best for you. And btw my GPA has dropped now to 3.86;)

I work full time during the day, and go to school full time at night. I have maintained my GPA of 3.9. The main reason being, time management. I have always been a procrastinator, and it worked, but when you go to school and work, something has to give. If you are too overwhelmed with your classes or work, then look for a job that is "school friendly." I am lucky enough to have a job close to home and school; not only that, I have a manager who has been where I am, and can completely relate to my situation. As someone posted above, you can always look into on campus jobs. Good luck in balancing your schedule, and maintaining a GPA of your liking!

absolutely not. i have 4.0 gpa, and i really believe that I would not have such high grades if i had to work during school. i give you a lot of credit, bogun. this is how most people get through higher education. it's not a "ridiculous amount to try and keep going" unless you can't handle it, and it seems you can handle it.

When I was in college I took an average of 17 credits a semester, worked 20 or more hours a week, had a 4.0 average, and still had a social life. I never missed a class, except for when I had a 12-inch paratubal cyst removed from around my right fallopian tube, but that's a different matter.

Tips:

-You generally don't have to read all of the "reading" assignments. Skimming is a good thing, as is paying attention in class.

-Be very vocal in class. ALWAYS participate.

-If you're a good at working under pressure, procrastinate.

-Talk to your professors.

-Burn the candle on both ends if you have to. It's only for a short time. I learned the very advantageous skill of being able to get by on no sleep if I had to.

For the record, I sent out TWO resumes when I graduated, and was accepted to the second job, which is where I currently work. Having a lot of skills and being a fantastic interview will get you really far. Be able to sell yourself.

When I was in undergrad I worked about 30 hrs a week. I have no idea what my GPA was, but I got into a good grad school.

I remember one year I set it up so that all my classes were from 8-4:30 Tue/Thur. That way I could work 6 hrs MWFSS. I was tired, but there was still plenty of time for school work. Treasa has given some great suggestions. By the way, you don't put down how many hours you worked somewhere, so if cash isn't a problem you could cut down on the total number of hours and still keep the job.
