Outcast
What on earth can be done to shut these pockets of inanity and bigotry down?
westernxer
Did you ever see the documentary about it (also called "Hell House")? Highly recommended.
quankanne
best you can do is ignore them ~ there will always be a group of religious folks who would like nothing more than to scare you into a personal relationship with God (which is an oxymoron to me, but I'm a statue-worshiping, Mary-loving Catholic, so what do I know?). Hell houses are pretty popular in this neck of the Bible Belt, and the "Left Behind" series a huge favorite
Author Outcast
There is something seriously wrong when you can create something that vile, call it 'religion' and in so doing get it a pass. I bet a genuine Satanic ritual wouldn't be allowed to proceed even though the two don't look all that different.
Sloppy
Did you ever see the documentary about it (also called "Hell House")? Highly recommended. Oh I saw that. I feel so separated from people with that kind of thinking, I never understand where the heck they are coming from. I was in disbelief when I saw that. The ridiculous arguments they were giving to the people arguing with them...argh! I'm an agnostic, and things like that are the things that make me stay VERY away from organized religion... Author Outcast
Never let maniac fundamentalists persuade you that they actually represent the mainstream of 'organized religion'.
quankanne
I suppose when it gets down to it, those places tend to amuse me. Someone knows what my hell will be like if that's where I end up? Sorry ... my personal thought is that hell is a place devoid of God and there's nothing, nothing, nothing to sustain you. Much scarier than devils leaping about or flames licking at you, because at least there's some sort of sensory input involved in those suggested scenarios than there is in a void. as long as man can create things to scare himself with, places like hell houses will be popular. quankanne
In the event that you, Gentle Reader, were wondering, this'll give an idea of what a hell house is about, taken from NPR www.npr.org/programs/wesat/features/2002/aug/hellhouse/ outie -- did you visit one in your city? westernxer
I don't think Canada has a Bible Belt. Makes for very interesting politics...
Moai
Wow! I have never heard of that. Makes my skin crawl. Why would anyone even go into one of those things?
quankanne
Why would anyone even go into one of those things? they're alternatives to the heathen-based "haunted houses" groups put on to raise funds. Instead of instilling fear with gore, they use spiritual and moral ammo … very popular here in East Texas, where we're part of the Bible Belt and fundamental spirituality is the norm. It serves its purpose into getting people to think about their spirituality, though I have a problem with "scaring people into God."

quankanne
Wow, america really has some weirdos that's because we're constitutionally guaranteed the right to be weird, and it's okay. It's a good thing, I'm thinking. At least I'm not in some God-forsaken land where I'm told what I should think, feel or believe ~ I won't get thrown in jail for disagreeing with prevailing sentiment. Maybe egged, but definitely not jailed :p
Blackfrost
Texas isn't so bad - in fact, if it wasn't for the heat, I'd still be living there. You want to see real wackos? come live in Seattle. These people are really nuts, and they will not hessitate to get right in your face about anything they hear or see from you that is not on track with their crazy viewpoints...... quankanne
Texas isn't so bad - in fact, if it wasn't for the heat, I'd still be living there. It's not the heat that kills you, it's the humidity. And boy did I ever figure that one out when I moved across state and started hearing people griping about how miserable East Texas is in the summer. As if! I grew up in South Texas, where the humidity was just horrible, so a day or three is nothing compared to the 325 days of the year it's humid down there! they will not hessitate to get right in your face about anything they hear or see from you that is not on track with their crazy viewpoints I've noticed that if you preface your own observations with "bless your/her/his heart …" you can get away with speaking your mind, as in "Bless your heart, you're crazier than a bedbug!"
Oh really, now...
Wow, america really has some weirdos that's because we're constitutionally guaranteed the right to be weird, and it's okay. Maybe egged, but definitely not jailed :p Really now? That would explain, then, how a county superior court judge managed to court order some parents not to teach their child Wicca recently. Sorry, but persecution still exists in this country. Hate to burst your bubble.
johan
Really now? quankanne
Really now? That would explain, then, how a county superior court judge managed to court order some parents not to teach their child Wicca recently. where? in some conservative small town in the Bible Belt, or in a big city that's a bit more lax in its outlook simply because there are people with different ideas living there? You really can't base your comment on one superior court judge's decision, because (s)he's only one of hundreds of thousands such judges in the US, and not all feel as strongly as this person. EnigmaXOXO
Sorry, but persecution still exists in this country. Hate to burst your bubble. Yes, in this country we should all have the right to be 'weird' and pray in whatever fashion we choose. (short of human sacrifice! ) After all, our ancestors migrated to this country to escape religious persecution in the first place. But Oh Really Now has touched on a very good point: Not until as recently as 1978, were the indigenous people of this continent afforded the same right to 'religious freedom' that we immigrants claimed for ourselves. http://www.cr.nps.gov/hps/laws/religious.htm
Sloppy
Really, what is WEIRD and what is NORMAL in today's world? I don't believe there is a difference anymore, we all do what we do. If we all accepted diversity and cultural differences, we would hardly find anything weird. Alpha might seem normal to me, while others might think he is weird. Hell Houses are not weird, they are just messed up With open mind we can laugh and hope they won't come to our towns:rolleyes:
