Anyone ever tried making this for their boyfriend?

Glamour magazine published an article about a recipe that has inspired numerous proposals throughout the years. It is a very simple recipe. I was stumped on what to make for dinner tonight. I had a whole chicken defrosting in the refrigerator. I picked up some lemons on the way home. It is supposed to be served with roasted red bliss potatoes and asparagus. I had a bag of yukon gold. I tourned them (wanted to practice my culinary skills) and tossed them in rendered chicken fat; added salt, pepper, and parsley then roasted. The asparagus didn't look good so I bought some green beans and steamed them. I didn't make the meal for a boyfriend. My roommate came home and I made him promise to not buy me an engagement ring after eating my chicken. He ate half a chicken, quite a few potatoes, and green beans. He said "I don't know how you do it. But you never make a dry chicken or turkey. Every chicken or turkey you have ever made has always been moist".

I can see why this meal would inspire proposals. It is very easy to prepare. It looks good. It tastes good. It is not fancy. It looks like something a wife/mother would make for dinner. It shows that she may have a domestic side. I'm not sure if this meal would ever inspired any engagements for me. Anyone care to test it out on their boyfriend?

Here is the recipe:

1 whole chicken (approx. 3 lb.)

2 medium lemons

Fresh lemon juice (1/2 cup)

Kosher or sea salt

Ground black pepper

Place rack in upper third of oven and preheat to 400 degrees. Wash chicken inside and out with cold water, remove the giblets, then let the chicken drain, cavity down, in a colander until it reaches room temp (about 15 minutes). Pat dry with paper towels. Pour lemon juice all over the chicken (inside and outside). Season with salt and pepper. Prick the whole lemons three times with a fork and place deep inside the cavity. (Tip: If lemons are hard, roll on countertop with your palm to get juices flowing.) Place the bird breast-side down on a rack in a roasting pan, lower heat to 350 degrees and bake uncovered for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and turn it breast-side up (use wooden spoons!); return it to oven for 35 minutes more. Test for doneness—a meat thermometer inserted in the thigh should read 180 degrees, or juices should run clear when chicken is pricked with a fork. Continue baking if necessary. Let chicken cool for a few minutes before carving. Serve with juices.

Are you trying to find out if the superstition works so you can apply it in your case? :D:p

I think times have slightly changed and men don't care about mother types of wives anymore. They want challenge and sensuality, as well as emotional stability and respect from a woman.

If you want a guy to propose to you, the best recipe is to show that you're good enough and be a little hard to get.

When a man sees that a woman cooks for him, he thinks "Oh, now I have to marry her because she cooked for me?" And women often do cook to show the man that they can be wives (I didn't say all women). Most guys would not marry a cook, but a woman they are in love with.

Go back to the make-up, diet, and fashion department! Looking sexy is still a higher factor for falling in love than cooking. ;)

Well, I have to disagree with RecordProducer. I don't think that men are out for little housewives, but I'm sure many will like it when their partner once in a while makes a little effort to spoil them. Ssomeone who knows how to prepare good food that his partner likes is able to give him a feeling of being cared for and a sense of being at home. Hunger is a physical need just like sex, but just like with sex there are also emotions attached to it. It's the reason why so many people have problems with their weight, because for them food has become a source of emotional comfort, maybe their only one. Eating gives them a feeling of comfort and security.

And seriously, I think guys after a while might also get tired of this constantly challenging and sexy doll at home. Sometimes you just want to get home and have someone there who does not overwhelm you with your demands and expectations of the 'perfect' man. Who just takes you as what you are and who has prepared you something nice to eat when you're hungry.
