For example rather than saying it was on sale or they bought it for someone else, they may come up with something like that. Like the bamboo story. It seems extremely ungracious to make them jump through hoops to amuse you when they went to the trouble of getting you a present. If there's a "special" story that the person wants to share, they will tell the recipient of the gift.
