will he come back?

My ex has just been around to see me. He bought the dog a collar and some chews and brought some money towards dog food. We actually had a good conversation, had a chat and a laugh. He says he will try and get back down on tuesday or friday for a bit. I want him back so badly. He just wants to be friends and is definitely not looking for a relationship with anyone right now. He says if it is too hard for me then its my call but thats the way the land lies. He is a very good friend to me, allways has been. He is such a nice person. I dont want to loose his friendship, yet I love him more than just friends and he knows it. We had a good conversation, laughing and joking and one thing and another. He tells me what he is up to and what he has been doing. I know there is no one else now, I believe him when he says it. The spark went between us and the love was lost on his part. 'Love you but not in love with you'. This was down to a number of factors, debt, running the house, just day to day stuff really, we took on too much too soon. He is 24 I am 28, we met when I was 21 and he was 17. Settled down quite early, moved in etc. Thing is I got all the partying out of my system before I met him, while he never. He has been partying hard since he left me, drinking loads and basically even by his own words 'going out of control' for a bit.

He cares for me a LOT and I know this. There is a bond between us, we have so much history. There is no hatred between us, although there is at times, especially during the breakup mostly on my part but that was just emotions running high. He left today and its the first time he has been and left and I havent fallen apart. I want him back so much.

I really do hope his feelings change about everything. I mean is he just getting it all out of his system? Will he come back?

I know its impossible to say for definite. But what are the chances? What does it look/sound like? He keeps saying it will never happen but then I get conflicting signals (or at least thats the way I interpret them).

He keeps saying it will never happen

Sounds like he's giving you respect by being honest with you. However, I wouldn't hold onto false hope. I'm sure that he loves you and like you said, you have a history together but sounds like his mind is made up.

The fact that he's remaining in your life (even though it's only as a friend) is a sign that he's not ready to give up on you completely but, he will never know the depth of his feelings for you while you're present. He's able to have his cake and eat it too. You on the other hand are suffering because he's unable to provide for you what you desire. Not healthy for you :(

Your cause is self defeating. Set him free, completely. Absence is always a good test. If he comes back, then you'll know it was meant to be.

I have stopped contacting him. He contacts me. Last time he did (apart from today) was last saturday. Said he would ring me in a few days that was like a week ago. Wanted to call him but I resisted. I have stopped chasing him. He was here today for a couple of hours and I asked if he could stay a bit longer. He said he couldnt but would come back down on tuesday. He has spent a fortune on drink since he left me and says thats how he was dealing with it. I just wish I could make everything better.

This is the hard part. I guess I will just have to be a friend and see how things develop. Its either that or cut him out of my life completely which I am not ready to do just yet. For two rreasons 1) I hope there may be a slim chance of working things out 2) I like him too much as a friend. I think if/when he meets someone new I will have too.
