Can somebody help?

So I finally got my boyfriend to tell me what the hold up was with us not getting engaged yet. (I posted earlier "Ring shopping, but no proposal, what's going on here.") He told me he wants to get married right now, but is really nervous about buying the engagement ring and doesn't know how to go about doing it. I told him to take a friend, or my brother or someone with him, but he said no to that. He is a very indecisive, shy and sort of sheltered guy. I am afraid that this could really hold things up (we have been dating for 3 years already) - for a long time. Any suggestions from anyone who has had experience with something like this????

I haven't had experience with it, but information is power. You can suggest that he gets facts about diamonds, etc. from online or from the library. Most jewelers are happy to show you the difference in their jewelry without obligation. With the info, shopping will be easier and he will be more decisive.

However, I'd be very careful about pushing info or resources on him as it could give him the impression that you are pressuring him.

It seems strange to me that he is "afraid" of buying something. What part of that is he worried about? The cost? The quality? Being able to return it? It isn't that different than going and buying a car . . .

You know, he has never even bought a car! His parents gave him one in High school, and he is still driving it. (We are 25 and 26..) I think his parents did a lot for him and now he really doesn't know how to do things on his own very well...I don't mind though, I really love him!

Couldn't you go with him?

I know it might not be the fairy tale idea of a proposal, but the shopping itself will be romantic enough. Then when you narrow it down to a couple rings let him "buy" it alone, and he can "suprise" you with a proposal whenever.
