A girlfriend can be a companion. A platonic friend can be a companion. An acquaintance can be a companion. A wife can be a companion. A nice dog can be a companion...I'm sure he doesn't mean you're a dog. A companion is basically a person (or animal) who is close in proximity to a person...who that person can have fun with, go places with, feel comfortable with, be himself with, etc. I think he meant this in a positive way. As far as your question about what a companion does, well since he has told you you are his companion, then a safe bet is that a companion does whatever you have been doing.
