Help!! SS is hurting himself

Recommended Posts

I wasn't sure where to post this so i chose this forum .. My ss is into sports and was in football and weighed 160pds he looked cute and fit didn't look sick at all..Well now he is wrestling and been wrestling since beginning of October of this yr and he has went from 160 to 148 with this short amount of time.. His coach is wanting him to lose 3 more pds by the December 30th and it i am concerned with his health!! My ss is good any sport he is in but i don't particularly care for wrestling because you have to make weight and most of the time the guys will do it a quick way that isn't good for your body..

My ss has been one to hardly ever get sick till last yr when he started his first yr of wrestling!! Now he is tired all the time ,complains of headaches, sore throats and never ever has any energy.. My ss doesn't hardly drink anything after practice except soda ,i tell him all the time to drink lots of water it replenish's what you lose and he won't listen !! He is now at home sick with a stomach bug and is resting !! My ss color doesn't look good at all , he normally is tan all yr but he basically doesn't have much color at all except clammy or yellow looking !! I can't explain the color it just don't look normal to me ..

My ? is how healthy is this for him to continue to do this and what can happen ? i heard that this one guy tried to do this same thing yrs ago lose a pd before a meet and he died the night before the meet.. My h says im being paranoid but he looks and feels sick all the time and reminds me of a girl starving herself!! My h tells me that he has a stomach bug and that is all ,yeah that may be the case but his immune system is so low that is why he is picking everything up !!

Oh yeah we thought his foot he hurt in football at the end of the season was better it was badly bruised and sprain and it has yet to heal too and that has been since October!!! He is now complaining of this, i always heard that if you body isn't getting what it needs then it can heal and repair because you are lacking minerals and vitamins needed to maintain in your body !! He complains of being thirsty all the time and his eyes look sucken in and circles under them!! If anyone can shed some light on this and help me with this situation and tell me whether or not i should worry or am i just being paranoid!!

He really does need to be drinking something other than water. It sounds like he may be dehydrating. As for the stomach bug and the odd color and eyes, you may be seeing him in a hospital if he doesn't change his ways. I'm he started out meaning well, but it sounds like he's taken this a little too far.

Best Wishes

Yeah my thoughts exactly !! That's what i keep telling my h all the time ... I understand he needed to make weight but he could have done it a more healthy way!! What exactly should i look for as far as him be dehydrating ? Do you think i should call the dr and see what they say ? I want to call his coach and bless him out and tell him what i think !! i am so mad and concerned for ss !! I did make him drink some pedilite that i had from my daughter being sick!!! He said it was yucky and didn't drink all that was in the glass!! Have you wrestled before? Thanks for the advice

lil moma,

when somebody is doing large amounts of physical excercise they are rapidly depleting their stores of iron. i would obviously not be wanting to diagnose but make sure he gets his iron levels checked, AND his iron reserves checked.

I thought about that cause he doesn't take any vitamins !! My ss g/f just called and asked to talk with him to check on him and i was telling her of my concern and she said he didn't eat at all yesterday and she noticing things too!! He lied to us cause we asked him did he eat lunch !! I am really concerned i wasn't aware he is eating too!! No wonder he doesn't have any energy !!

Call the wrestling coach and tell him that your son is no longer allowed to participate. Then tell the boy that either he pays attention to his health and follows your instructions or you will call every wrestling club in town and tell them you won't agree to his participation. It's time for tough love. He's still 16 and a minor.

Since your husband doesn't agree that he's endangering himself, chances are you probably aren't going to be able to "forbid" wrestling.

What you can do is make him understand that he can do it in a healthy manner. 3 lbs by 12/30 is only slightly over a pound a week. That can definitely be done in a healthy manner. Call his coach, tell him your concerns, and sit down and work out a diet/exercise regiment for your ss. You could even call/email a nutritionist. Talk to him rationally and make him understand that if he continues in the manner he is currently taking, he will loose muscle instead of fat, and will therefore not be nearly as competative as he would be if he takes the time and energy to do it the right way.

Make him a doctor's appointment. Have a professional tell him similar things. Since he's got a stomach bug, you've got the perfect excuse to make him talk to the doctor.
