My sister is in trouble

I have recently been informed by a third party that my 36 year old sister's partner has been hitting her. She was hospitalised for injuries last week. When asked she denies everything and says that this is where she wants to be. We cannot get her on her own to talk to her. We are very worried as he has a very bad temper and an alcohol problem.

What would be the best approach?

there are excellent support and advice systems in place to deal with domestic violence. use them. and yes, get her OUT OF THERE. if she's in denial over the battering because she's dependent on the a**hole, it's a lot harder, but organisations who deal with domestic violence know how to deal with this.

Contact your local domestic violence center and ask to speak to a counselor--not a hotline worker. Ask them for their advice.

Are the doctors who treated your sister not required by law to report suspected abuse? In some states because of the Stockholm syndrome that's a part of some domestic violence, the state files charges on behalf of the victim when they don't want to press charges of assault against their SO (because she's afraid the next time he beats her she'll be dead).

Find out what the laws are and how to deal with this situation by trained professionals (domestic violence counselors and police who deal with domestic violence). Your sister is in serious trouble. Her life is in danger, and she's too far gone to be able to act on her own behalf, it sounds like. You're going to have to be her advocate if you want your sister alive.
