ManicHayze
I giggled when I saw this thread. Because, me and my girlfriend had a huge thing regarding pheromones. She described it as this to me, in simplest terms I can put it. ( I don't know how accurate it is, so don't take my word for it, but it makes sense to me). Our bodies emit pheromones naturally, which attract certain types of people. based on their own coding of pheromones.. i.e, My body emits a certain code of pheromones, etc and naturally attracts people with other types of pheromones. I think this can also be described as physical chemisty. Have you ever been around someone you should didn't like? Got a bad feeling around? All for no reason? She attributes this to pheromones. Same reason for some people you just seem drawn to, for no apparent reason. Again, she nor I am no scientist, and have no data to back this up. Just a hypothesis we have both become to believe
Lucasarts
cool theory cept how do you explain when you at first dont like someone just by their presence, but when you get to know them, they are pretty cool people and you feel more at ease with them?
Tangerina
That's true, manic, they have done many studies like that... and they found that one of the purposes of these pheremones is promoting genetic diversity.. They have done tests such as have a random assortment a men sleep in these cotton t-shirts and then put them in ziploc bags in the morn and then women would smell an assortment and say which man they found most attractive just based on a smelly t-shirt (they never saw or inteacted with the guys otherwise) and it turned out that they were usually the most attracted to the scent of the men who were the most genetically different from them... Cool, huh?!?!?!?!? This happens a lot in the animal world too.... I have to admit, I am willing to fork out money every now and then for products that imporve my sex life, or maybe to try something that might not help but is worth a shot (toys, lingerie, perfume, etc) but as far as the pheremones go I would say keep your money in your wallet because nature is already taking care of all of that for you. Lucasarts, this has more to do with pure sexual attraction than social factors... it is also a very subtle thing, but it does play a role...

As far as I know you get attracted to someone whose immune system is genetically different enough to yours so that they complement each other, thus your offsprings will be better prepared for the harms and risks of a hostile environment. At the same time I also heard that we prefer people who are similar to us. cool theory cept how do you explain when you at first dont like someone just by their presence, but when you get to know them, they are pretty cool people and you feel more at ease with them? Good question. I've also wondered about this. This thing with the pheromones seems somewhat mysterious, but the experiment with the women and the chairs is indeed true.
