Tangerina
Anyone else on BC experience yeast infections before or around the time of their period? I hate it, I have had about 4 in the past 2 years and 2 months ago I had a small one that I thought I killed with natural remedies (garlic and acidopholis, but it came back this month and I tried natural remedies again (because I am sick of that monostat stuff, it hurts and is supper strong) but then I think I had too much sex this weekend and it came back.... also, it has made sex kind of painful which is not cool... I think I am just gonna give in and go for the harsh chemicals today, but I hate doing it! Maybe I will try one more day of garlic.... I did find a great site, tho, about this stuff and diy cures and it has helped me a lot.... thought some other ladies would like it... http://www.msu.edu/user/eisthen/yeast/yourself.html Even though I am going for the heavy stuff this time since my problem is getting out of hand, I really do vouch for this stuff, it has helped me a lot... HAHA, P.S. great story, I told my BF I thought I was getting a yeast infection and he asked what I was gonna do so I told him I would probably wrap a clove of garlic in cheesecloth and soak the cloth in acidopholis and put it in my vagina... and he was like "cool!".... and so we were studying and he is like "can we make the garlic thing now?!?!?" and I am like... naw, lets study more, I'm not exactly eager..." and a bit later he is like "can we make it now?" so I say OK and he scapmers off to get all the stuff and he is like "this is fun, its like and art project, this is the best thing we've done all day." HAHA, 1 point for getting BFs involved in women's health, I guess......
slubberdegullion
Be extremely careful with so-called "natural" remedies. In many cases, they do little, if anything, to alleviate the problem. They may mask it for a while, but in the meantime you may have an infection that's partying all through your genital paraphernalia. See link, page 14. Nobody likes to use harsh chemicals, but it's probably the only way.
Author Tangerina
Thanks slub.... yah, I do trust the natural stuff because I have researched it a lot and know lots of people who do it and it works for them and has worked for me, but I agree with you that is not something to put all of your trust in... I kind of use it as a first try and if it works, great, but if it doesn't then I go for the big guns... I just hate monostat, I have literally cried in pain when using it before because it burns so badly! But I think I am gonna get some today... boo....
slubberdegullion
Hey, if it's working for you, then by all means do what you're comfortable with. Hope you feel better soon, regardless of how your infection gets treated.

kitten chick
Sex is a major cause of yeast infections. (Antibiotics are also, I know you mentioned you had been sick.) I'm assuming you're not using condoms since you mentioned you're on birth control. Try to pee after every time you have sex if you can. The pressure forces out some of the semen which is disruptive to your chemical and hormonal balance. You can also take an acidophillis supplement daily which should help. If you get a really bad one and monistat isn't working for you, your doctor can prescribe Diflucan which is a one time pill that knocks out yeast infections really well. Also, don't have sex while you have a yeast infection. You can infect your partner.
blind_otter
Recurrent yeast infections are common in women who have dysthymia (low-grade, constant depression)... (This is from nva.org) Cyclic Vulvovaginitis Women with cyclic vulvovaginitis have recurrent burning and itching symptoms at the same stage of the menstrual cycle. Many have cyclical bouts of yeast infections and some have other causes for their symptoms. Talk to your OBGYN with questions. The daily acidophilus supplement helps, too... Author Tangerina
kitten, we are using condoms even tho I am on BC (habit mostly, and we both want to get tested for HIV just to be safe even tho neither of us is high risk) but I think it is all the moisture and disruption from sex that make the yeasties like to grow... also, we use spit for lube more often than not (hey, its cheap, and faster than reaching for a bottle) and I think that might have something to do with it.... good advice about peeing, tho, I think I read that that is always important after sex to reduce the risk of UTIs, condom or no... Thats it right there i think. spit. The enzymes in spit have been known to cause yeast to grow ten fold.
blind_otter
This explains why, with my last partner (who greatly enjoyed giving me head), I had recurrent yeast infections... When sexual activities were looked at, however, the researchers found women who had recurrences were more likely to have participated in cunnilingus (or oral sex given to the woman) or masturbation of the woman with saliva in the past month. Only 14.5 percent of women reported masturbation with saliva, however, while 69 percent reported cunnilingus, suggesting oral sex is the more common risk. Oral sex and masturbation with saliva proved to be risk factors whether men showed signs of yeast in their mouth or not. The risk was also not affected by the presence of Candida in the women’s genital area. (http://www.med.umich.edu/opm/newspage/2003/yeastinfections.htm)
Becoming
Diflucan will knock it out with pills,--great stuff!--and then you can keep the system in balance naturally, but it's really hard to get rid of resistant ones naturally.
blind_otter
Diflucan will knock it out with pills,--great stuff!--and then you can keep the system in balance naturally, but it's really hard to get rid of resistant ones naturally. In this study they did swabs of various sites on teh body (mouth, sex organs, fecal swabs, etc.) - for 1 year after the initial infection. It was gross and freaky (or fross, as I say), because many owmen with recurrent yeast infections had yeast infecting their entire body. It was present in the mouth, the digestive tract, the sex organs -- everywhere!
Author Tangerina
AHHHH.... ok, no more spit for me then.... not really planning on giving up oral sex, but at least I'm gonna eliminate the "spit as lube" thing.....

It was gross and freaky (or fross, as I say), because many owmen with recurrent yeast infections had yeast infecting their entire body. It was present in the mouth, the digestive tract, the sex organs -- everywhere! I needlessly battled a terrible yeast infection for months. Monistat knocked it back a bit but it kept coming back. I was always tired, felt crappy. Go to the dr. Complete physical reveals yeast infection. Took one diflucan and presto! I started feeling better the next day. It was amazing, and I haven't had one since. That is one magic pill! (I couldn't remember if it was just one or three, but yes, I think it's one.) Anyway, I hate taking drugs if there's a natural remedy, and I tried everything, but once it gets out of control, it's time to go nuclear. You may be able to just call your dr./dr.' s nurse and ask for the presecription if you tell her/him you've tried Monistat and it keeps coming back. Saves a trip to doc. Anyways my 'tang was so swollen and ouchy I was putting ICE PACKS on it and the ice would MELT in like 30 minutes. I had to go to the doctor and she used this natural remedy stuff, some kind of dye, she painted my area with it. It was burgundy-purple for like 3 days. Anyways -- if you are experiencing a reaction this severe, go TO THE DOCTOR ASAP.
