TUDOR
So the wife has requested we get a treadmill for the house. With her schedule it is really hard for her to make time to work out but insists if we had a treadmill at the house she could use it while watching her shows at night. I am all for helping her to exercise and stay fit. My concern is that the treadmill will just become a clothes rack or decoration for the house. So for those of you that have one at home or think you want one at home, do you or would you use it like you thought you would? These things aren't cheap and I want to make sure she will use it. Most people I know that have one don't really use them. Be honest please.
bluechocolate
I have what was once a very expensive rowing machine. It's now a very expensive towel rail.
slubberdegullion
I didn't own a treadmill, but my ex got on a fitness kick once and insisted on the most expensive Nordic Track that was on the market at that time. She kept it up for about a week, and eventually sold it to one of her office cohorts for 20 cents on the dollar. call me a cad, but I don't miss her one bit!
a4a
buy one used! you cannot dump them for $50 once you own one....... most I see are very expensive valets for clothing and a good place for dust to collect. Buy her a used one...... if she sticks to it...... upgrade to a newer one. a4a- I lost my marbles

How long did you use it before that became the case? If she will use it for at leat a year I am ok with that.

Author TUDOR
I found a used one that is about $2000 new with only 34 miles on it. In treadmill terms 34 miles is pretty low I think. I talked the guy down to $500 so far. I am willing to spend that much on it if helps improve my wife's self esteem to feeling like she is getting to work out. I just have a bad a feeling it will become a dust collector. I think my wife knows I very rarely tell her no if ever and while I want her to be happy I feel like I indulge her requests as random as they can be too often and it adds up. So she better use this damn thing.
lilmoma1973
Don't have a tread mill but if i had one it would be used .. I love to exercise depends on the motivation of the individual !! You have to want to use it thats the key .. Exercise is the first thing i do after taking the kids to school helps me unwind and have my time.. Get a used one as a4a that way if she doesn't what did you lose !! I want to invest in a punching bag but have no where to put it!! Why not go walking with her and it might motivate her to use the treadmill when the weather is bad..
slubberdegullion
Ditch the treadmill idea. Go for a walk as a couple instead. Not only will it help you both get into / maintain shape, it will give you and her a chance to chat without interruptions. Can't leave the kids? Get a babysitter. You can't lose. You save your $$, you both get in shape, you work on your relationship all at the same time.

So she better use this damn thing. We rarely used ours (once or twice a week initially and then it sat idle for months). There are a couple fitness equipment consignment places in the Metroplex, you probably would be able to sell it at one of those if things don't work out. I thought I'd use ours more since it is so dang hot in the summer but I still find I prefer walking in the great outdoors (and by nighttime, I don't want to exercise). If she has been a nighttime exerciser in the past then it could be a good idea.
bab
Wire it so that the TV only works when the treadmill is running. Didn't you say you did this with a stationary bike once? Then, she'll have to use it in order to watch her shows. I plan to do this once I have a RJ. Unfortunately this can backfire if you can't unwire it. The superbowl would be extremely long is you had to run the entire time...

We use to go on walks around the neighborhood when time permitted. The problem is she doesn't get home most nights till after 9 PM. So by the time she gets changed and we go on 30 minute walk it is 10 PM. She feels if we had something inside that she can do she would do it more and it not be a hassle. She likes to come home after a long day and watch a couple of her shows and then goes to bed. But she said she wouldn't mind walking on the treadmill while watching her shows and still get to bed at a good time. Other wise if we go for walk it results in her getting to bed much later and leaving her very tired which ultimately effects everything including our sex life. This woman loves her sleep. I get my workouts in after work because I am home by 5:30 most days. So by the time she gets home I have already worked out and eaten dinner and just waiting for her to come home. I"m sure I will get it for her I just wanted to know if people really use them or if their gung ho mentality leads to the purchase only for the motivation to use it dwindle and it collect dust. magda
It might be the working out at night, period, that keeps her awake late on exercise nights. She probably shouldn't work out later that 7:00 or 8:00pm if sleep is so important.
kitten chick
I belong to a gym now but when I was growing up my mom bought a treadmill. She did use it quite a bit. I used it too, all the time, before I went off to college. Once I left she stopped using it but it was overworked and dying. We did use it as a clothes rack but dumped all of the stuff on the floor when we worked out.
lilmoma1973
Walking is good if you are doing it at a steady pace because you get your heart rate up in order to burn calories you need something like a cardio ,yoga and pilates and kick boxing is good for that.. You can buy he dvd 's to exercise to on the weekends when she can't walk..Does she work on the weekends? I exercise even on weekends great stress reliever !!
magda
I say, look into renting a treadmill. I'm betting she uses it a few times and decides that exercising at night keeps her up too late and she drops it within a few weeks.

I actually prefer to exercise at night because it knocks me out about an hour afterwards. When I exercise in the morning I'm tired all day.

All things considered, this may be your best option.
