Woggle
I am being offered a promotion at work that will almost double my salary and give me more benefits but I don't want it. For one I will pretty much have no life because of the long hours and I am also planning on starting my own business. I don't like working for somebody else even though I am good at this job. There is also a possible move to San Francisco in the next 2 years and I am in NJ but I feel like an idiot for turning this down. Also if I turn it down a woman that I utterly can't stand might get it and I know this is petty but I don't wnat her getting it. She would be horrible for the company. Is there any way I could persuade my boss to promote another woman who I feel would be a much better choice?
bluechocolate
Is there any way I could persuade my boss to promote another woman who I feel would be a much better choice? You can but try. If you do, don't mention the other woman at all, just build on the strengths of the person you think is better for the job. If they think you're the right person for the job then they should be willing to listen to your opinions on who else would be good for it. Turning down such a good promotion may mean no such others will come your way, but if you're starting your own business you may not care too much about that anyway.
justagirliegirl
What about the promotion you don't like? How close are you to starting your own business? What stage is it in? Why might you be relocating across the country? Personally I would take it for a year or two for the experience and all that extra money coming in you'll have to start your business with. Author Woggle
What about the promotion you don't like? How close are you to starting your own business? What stage is it in? Why might you be relocating across the country? Personally I would take it for a year or two for the experience and all that extra money coming in you'll have to start your business with. I don't want to commit to a job that I won't be keeping plus I don't need this job. I am already very wealthy through some wise investments but I work to have something to do plus have a little extra spending money so I can let some sizable amount of money collect interest. The job is not horrible but the office politics and backstabbing are too much. I am trying to do my job and help this company grow while everybody else is trying to undermine each other. It gets to you after a while. I feel stifled because I would rather put my talent and brains to use than play their games. I don't even know what type of business I want to start but I have a few ideas. I am moving to San Francisco because I am getting married in june and my future wife wants to move out there. She is originally from there and claims I would love it. It is something to look into plus it seems like a good place to open up a business.
justagirliegirl
Thanks for explaining your situation. In that case, I wouldn't take it at all. Being wealthy gives you more options of course, and i certainly wouldn't take a job I didn't like. I am not wealthy although some people tell me I am but I am in a position to only take jobs I like. Art_Critic
I don't even know what type of business I want to start but I have a few ideas. Good luck then.. Almost all people want to start their own business.. It takes more than that.. Entrepreneurship is something very few people have.I'm not saying that you don't have it.. but it is more than a desire like you say you have. I wouldn't even let this be a deciding factor in your decision and I think your other factors need to be used.. ie: working longer hours is a good reason to NOT take the promo if you are worried about your pending marriage. I also think that UNTIL you are married you would be a fool to turn down something with this type of possible positive impact on your life..

Helping people set up their own business is part of my job so I would know how to do it for myself. You missed my point.. Entrepreneurship is something very few people have and everyone has ideas.. If you don't know WHAT kind of business you want then your in trouble.. I'm in the Art Business and have owned my own company for over 24 years.. But Art is in my Blood and my family.. I also currently own a real estate company.. but that is based on a differnent kind of knowledge that I have. You need to open a business that you will excel at.. I personally have owned other companies as well .. some did not do as well as the main one I currently have.. the difference was that they were off shoots of my main company and were in areas that I had no expertise so they were destined to fail. To get back on topic I think that you should take the promo. If you get married and move to SF then you have to quit anyhow. Good luck
lilmoma1973
What i usually do for a big decision to be made is i will make a list of my pro's and con's and make my decision by that.. You go by how you would benefit by taking the job..

Oh and congrats on the upcoming nuptials! That's great Woggle! If you feel comfortable enough then tell your boss the reasons why that woman should not be up for the job you're going to refuse. Don't make it personal at all, and praise her as well - Some good things about her, cuz if you don't it will look like sour grapes.
RoxStar
If you are already wealthy and plan on moving or starting your own company dont take the promotion. Keep in mind you are moving, so you wont be there that long and wont have to deal with the other woman getting the promotion instead of you.
