'Big-Brother' at work

Recommended Posts

My boss just told me today that he is going install some kind of spy software on everybody's computers. He thinks that he can quit the internet surfing going on. I surf, I admit it. But not in extreme. My other work gets done...on time.

So, what is this spy program he's talkin' about? Just curious. I am not even sure he knows exactly what it can do.

There are all sorts of programs that employers can use to see what's going on in the office. My bet is that this thing flags up users who have accessed websites that are not in a database of sites deemed to be appropriate for work. They can do this with phone calls as well.

Probably something will record every website you all go to and then he will have that access by installing it in the computers.. They are also key loggers you can install as well records every stroke you make and who you chat with and what you do!!

Keyloggers and other spyware are pretty commonplace at the office. Frankly, as a boss at one time, I really didn't care if employees chatted or surfed, as long as the work got done. But IME most employers take a dim view of it.

Porn is another matter entirely, though. That's a firing offence.

I guess you won't be surfing LS too often at work if they can track what you've been up to online.

The radio thing is just that, it's when you're surfing and active is the stuff they're looking for.

Could be a keylogger, which means becareful with emails at work cuz your password will be known by them if they check up on you. And anything that you type.

Good luck!

This is probably a stupid question...

So, once the software is installed, can it show any surfing activity *before* the official monitoring begins?

I wouldn't think so but he could find out in history where you all go doing the day as well ..

I know! Dammit! I am home sick today...but, I've been known to surf at work, too. Sometimes, the workload is low. Guess I better bring a book.

There are a couple slackers here, and I am glad that this is going into effect...sort of.

I have mixed feelings.

That probably doesn't matter. I'd imagine it's all being recorded on a server somewhere as well as locally.

Good thing then your boss shouldn't know nothing before the spy thing is installed unless he is a real whiz at computers !! My h knows how to recover stuff like that so it can be done.. Be careful!!

We are not a huge corporation. About 10 employees. My boss knows enough about computers to make him dangerous. lol. I am glad that he is finally standing up to his employees and not letting them walk all over him anymore. I've wanted him to do that for along time!!! Right now, there is veeerry little discipline...if any. I just want to know where I stand in all of this. My computer is the only one that is not connected to the server. No need, well, except for this.
