Loudmouth Christians

Smart People.....? Should be no insult there either.

Some people may consider themselves "smart" but cannot figure out how to or think it is difficult to set up an ebay acct. (just an example Outcast). :p

I do not think all christians are stupid..... far from it. I just thinkthat what they believe is so whacked out. Perhaps the same way many christians think that buddist or Hindus or Catholics are so whacked out. Or like you may think I am too stupid to believe in your god. There are stupid christians, stupid buddist, stupid catholics, and stupid atheists.

People tend to assume that neutral terms are insulting or offensive when they themselves are defensive. I do it myself.

it's all in the matter of delivery. My faith and how I express it is no big secret on this board, and I don't get offended when someone says something to let me know they don't agree with it. However, taking potshots and telling me I'm wrong because I believe as I do is a whole other story. You saying Christianity is mythological, frankly, is an interesting comment (to me at least) because I want to know how you came to that conclusion. I can see where some of the traditions we adhere to, or even the belief that the Blessed Mother has appeared to people constitutes mythology even as I believe in those appearances. Some people, though, just heavy-foot the dialogue by being insulting in their opinions.

you've heard it said that opinions are like *ssholes, everybody's got them? Well, nobody enjoys a stinky, dirty bunghole!

Saying that a belief system is based in mythology is not a pot shot AFAIK. Nor is it telling someone that they are wrong, nor is it an attack. It's just a thing. No value judgement. It's hard to control delivery when you are writing, using words that you feel are value neutral. Again, I'm not psychic. I can't foretell how people will read what I have written, or what tone it will take in their heads!!!

I won't go into my personal beliefs but let me say, in high school I took a class called "The Bible as Literature" and we spent a lot of time comparing the mythological systems in place in ancient greece and rome with the stories of the bible.

But to go into Christianity as mythology is a whole 'nother thread.

Now that you know that some feel it's offensive, does it matter to you at all? Just curious....

I'm confused as to why it's offensive to people. All I've seen so far is, some people find it offensive, for personal reasons. And I am to eradicate the word from my socio-political vocabulary, ASAP.

So apparently in the Newspeak dictionary, "myth" and "mythology" will disappear??

I have also called it a myth. To me that is what it is.

Did you know that I find the spouting off about being a lesser human for not believing in your god is offensive as well? Or having my life dictated to because of religious beliefs that I want no part of is offensive to me as well?

(such as blue laws, reproductive rights, use of porn, or being gay)

Does that matter to you Moose, now that you know?

I am not being a smartass..... truly am not trying to come to understanding why it is so important to impose christian beliefs and values on me personally.

I was just curious. You don't have to do anything at all. I don't care if mutual respect doesn't suit you. And, go ahead and insult me or disrespect my faith.....no skin off my back, I'm getting used to it.

Just don't expect me to treat you in kind......

See my response to Otter? Same applies to you. I do feel your frustration, but I'm not the one calling you a lesser human for dismissing my faith. I'm not the one enforcing the blue laws, or tampering with people's rights to reproduce, use porn, and I don't bash gays.......I'm not the one in your face pushing Christianity off on you.

Still, I find myself placed in this group just because I believe in God. Just because I'm Christian.

You believe what you want, I won't stop you, I won't critisize you, I can live with that. Let me believe what I want without you or anyone else calling my faith a myth.

I just finished 8 BAJILLIONS POSTS (excuse the hyperbole, but I am irritated) ABOUT HOW I DIDN'T INTEND ON INSULTING ANYONE.

I was curious, too, and all you did was act like a child having a temper tantrum who refuses to listen to reason.

Moose, honestly. I asked if there was a reason other than personal opinion why the word "MYTH" is offensive. No one can answer my question. I'm not insulting or degrading anyone. But I am insulted that you think I am.

I suppose this is just another reason why I should shut the hell up and stop asking questions.

Moose no disrespect was pointed toward you as a person.... for all I know you may be pro- gay, think that not being able to buy a beer on Sunday is stupid..... but it is a two way street with insults.

It is not fair to lump you in with lets say the likes of AT who damns us all to hell...... you are right....... I have not seen you do that. And believe what you will, that is your choice. But understand that your belief means nothing to me, it does not hold water with me. You should not let it bother you. Your faith is yours alone.

I still do not see what the word Myth has to do with an insult to you.....

In the academic field of mythology, a myth is a story of supernatural events or heroism that is believed to be true by people who perceive religious or spiritual significance in it. Use of the term by scholars does not imply that the tale is either true or false.

If I were to say Moose believes in some bullshyt fairy tale.... well yes I can see that as an insult......

Does the word myth = stupid or silly to you? I am again being very serious.

I am so curious to know why when I discount a christians belief they get so miffed. I am not threatening to burn your church for goodness sake.

I should hope not! A police record is not a pretty thing! :bunny:

"Myth" in and of itself isn't a threatening word, but sometimes the posts on faith and spirituality and religion get pretty hairy at the 'Shack, and things escalate pretty quickly when the fur gets a-flying and feelings get trounced upon. And people begin to question if (or interpret that) posts have a hurtful tone to them. It's one thing to say "I see a lot of mythology common to such and such religion and blah blah blah," and another to say, "yeah, well, you're all based on a myth anyway." One gives the reader an idea where the analogy is coming from, the other is downright disrespectful of a person's beliefs.

Blind Otter, Geoffrey, and everyone else,

Please, I'm not trying to argue with anyone. Someone calling what I construde as truth a myth is just insulting to me. I don't expect anyone to lose sleep over it.

And again, it's in the delivery of it.

The point is, if I, myself, found out that something I said irritates you, I would do my best to stir clear of saying it again, out of respect.

Doesn't mean I have to change my views about it, it's just a matter of mine showing respect towards you.

Okay, so academically, using the term myth doesn't say anything about what the user thinks about the beliefs. But in real life? How often do any of you, no matter what your beliefs are regarding the supernatural, refer to your actual beliefs as myths.

I think there is a big difference between saying, I don't believe in that, than saying, Your beliefs are false. I mean, isn't that what this whole thread is really about? Getting annoyed with Christians who tell you that what you believe is false? Why is it so suprising that a Christian would also be offended in the same situation?

I think this all falls back into my theory of perception. Moose perceives the term Myth as infering that he's been hoodwinked. (I don't remember who originally used the term now) intended it in a non-threating academic sense, so doesn't understand why Moose is offended.

Person being preached to perceives that they are considered less than human because they aren't Christian. Christian perceives that they want to share the love of Christ, and they feel their doing so out of LOVE, so doesn't understand why Person they are preaching to is annoyed.

Always think about where other people are coming from, and try and understand their motivation. It saves alot of anger and frustration.

To these smart people,( I like to include myself in this group if I may ), they aren't myths. And we don't appreciate people like you saying they are. It's insulting, and very disrespectful.

Oh fergawdsakes, Moose, would you get off the pot?

I was telling SMOOCHIE to not believe the myth that ALL 'organized religions' 'tell' people what to think.'

Now are you all happy that Moosie got his panties into a twist yet again?

I'm a Christian, Moose. Just not one that thinks it's ok to order other people to do what I do or to say that I 'know' the truth because I understand I'm human and flawed and may have misunderstood.

Now kwitcherbitchin every time I post something, damn it.

I'm totally shocked,.......really......

I don't understand why you are shocked. Not all Christians have a need to... uh... *spread the joy* as another poster said. Some of us prefer to have a private and personal relationship with God that doesn't involve any grandstanding. :)

I don't need to explain myself. All one has to do is look at most of Outcast's posts to understand why.

Whoa, hold on a sec. Are you saying that Outcast's style of posting and her way of thinking make her *unchristian* somehow? Does she not *fit into the Christian mold*, Moose?
