I'm 19, a college student, and male. Lately, I've been noticing a few things:

1)my sleep schedule is out-of-control

2)I get ridiculously tired at unusual times

Let me address Issue 1 first. Since my schedule this semester is very laid back, I find myself going to bed very late and waking up AT THE EARLIEST 10AM. Other days I have to be up by noon at the most. I don't really do anything energy dependant except attend class and occasionally practice softball with some friends. I realize this is hurting me, but I Do Not know who to modify my schedule.

As for Issue 2, Every day I feel tired like I want to go to sleep. Sometimes I often take naps at 5 or 6pm and wake up around 9pm. This is an obvious sign of not being able to go to sleep at a reasonable time. Today, I began feeling very tired at 8pm when I woke up today at 11am. It doesn't make any sense to me--If i woke up at my own will, shouldn't I be chock full of energy?

Is anyone a sleep doctor or has been through the same/similar thing?

Go to your Dr and get a full physical. Get your blood levels check just to make sure you're not missing any important minerals and vitamins. Last year I had a B12 defiencey and had to go once a month for B12 shots. They helped so much, my energy level picked up and so did my all around general mood.

Another thing is, how are your eating habits? You could have low blood sugar levels and that can affect how you feel. Start eating smaller meals, more snacks during the day. AND, eat something light before bed. Drink water, do some yoga too. See if that helps.

Keep track on paper (do you have a daytimer?) when you start to feel crappy. Keep note of time, weather, what you ate, stress level etc...

Good luck and let us know what the DR says!!

What things are you eating?

Do you feel kinda down about anything, lonely, sad, etc?

Have you ever had your Thyroid levels checked?

A couple months ago, I was suffering from being reeeally tired with lack of energy. My doctor told me to take vitamin B12. So, I started a daily vitamin and it's been like night and day with my energy levels. I'm off to take my Flintstone vitamin right now! (I'm not joking...kid's vitamins are more potent than you might think.)

I'm in my second year of University and I have the exact same problem.

There are many days when I don't get any sleep at all. I've been going to bed usually around 3am not being able to sleep and getting up around 7 am for my morning class and then on the days when I don't have class I've slept in as late as 1pm. Or else there'll be days when I end up taking naps around 4 or 5 pm. One day I ended up waking up at 1 in the afternoon, getting up to do laundry and then going back to bed until 5 in the evening. I'm always tired. I have serious insomnia. About every other day I get no sleep. I'm not sure what's wrong with me. I just assume it's the stress from working and school. It's been like this for over a year but not to this extent. It's just been really bad lately.

Are you stressed out?

I eat normal things...chicken, pizza, salads, somewhat healthy stuff. I try and stay away from Fast Food joints. I am currently involved in a complicated LDR...:(

I'll pick up some B12 from Walgreens tomorrow, it seems to be a prime suspect in my case.

I wouldn't say that I have insomnia because when I feel tired, I can usually fall right asleep. But when it comes down to night time around 10:30-11pm, I find myself quite energetic and without any sleeping sedative, there is a gaurantee that I will be up to at least 3am. It sucks and I do NOT want to depend on sleeping aids to put me to sleep. School work isn't too much of a stress on me, but I do find myself depressed often.

Hmmm. I think my bad sleeping habits originated from my depression, but now that I'm not depressed any more I'm stuck with what resulted from it.

Or it could be a combination of the physical and the psychological or more one than the other.

My friend is seeing a therapist who helped her a little with her sleeping patterns. I'd defnitely check out a doctor first.

Be sure to get your blood levels checked. I had NO idea a year ago that my levels were dangerously low, almost to the point I was anemic!! So that is why I had the B12 shots once a month to bring my levels back up to normal.

I see too, that you say you're in a LDR, so I'm thinking there's alot of emotional stress going on too...Which actually depleets the body of B12! (Just fyi.)

Hope you feel better soon. OH yah, drink ALOT of water throughout the day too.

Danny:

I, too, think you should go to the doctor. You could have mono. That will make you sleep huge amounts and still feel drained.

You could also have sleep apnea. There are checklists online for deciding if that's something to talk to your doctor about.
