wing81
I was writing because lately I haven't found anything to satisfy me. I am in school and have become bored with my project and I have been trying to find other activities to become involved in so I can try and focus my efforts on school work but be able to have something I can count on to relax with. I have tried numerous different things and nothing seems to satisfy me from sports to art to learning new skills. I seem to be bored with everything I have tried. I'm not sure if others have had this problem or what I might be able to do in order to help myself focus and still enjoy life. I could use some advice so I can get the work I need to get done done. My_Other_I
Yeah, I've been there several times. I usually go and volunteer help with old folks or mentally handicapped folks. Kinda makes you realize that life is about more than just your self. It's a tough spot to be in. Transition is always hard. Have you tried to read some self-help books about self discovery? If nothing else helps, just wait it out. This, too, shall pass. Just like everything else. Good luck to you!
Curmudgeon
I was writing because lately I haven't found anything to satisfy me. That "flattened" effect could be because of depression. It might be worth looking into.
HotCaliGirl
It only gets worse once you get out of school, that's why everyone's on medication.
fredrolin
I am 42, married with child and I hate my life. Why...I don't know. But I hate my job even though I make good money and the job isn't that bad. I live in a good house in a good neighborhood and basically don't want for anything....I am sure millions of people would do anything to be in my place. I guess my advice is to be thankful that you are healthy and have the choices and means to go to school and be want you want...so many miserable people never get the chance. That sounds as if you're not managing to focus and concentrate on what you're doing. If you try any activity, but allow your mind to wander off track, you'll get bored...and that's particularly likely to happen if you keep switching from one activity to another. There's such a thing as too much stimulation. eg imagine a 3 year old with 100 different toys to play with. They can't focus on anything for more than a couple of minutes....one of the reason that spoilt kids are often unhappy kids. Pick one new skill you want to learn and devote yourself to it for a while. Trying a whole load of different things all at once is hopeless. It's like trying to read 14 different novels at once; you only end up not getting anything very fulfilling out of any of them.
HotCaliGirl
lindya, your advice SOUNDS good but in practice I think it will be useless. i've been where wing81's been and there's no solution. Like fredrolin, i have the job, the money, the house and all the other crap but still find no meaning to life and often easily feel miserable despite hobbies and all the other stuff. You just have to be real and say "join the club."

You just have to be real and say "join the club." You're sounding a bit P.d off there, HCG. My point is that trying to fill one's life with lots of different things just in order to provide "fillers" doesn't work. Like an unhappy child in a nursery full of toys he's bored with because he picks one toy up, plays with it for a few minutes, casts it aside, picks the next one up etc. Whether it's music, art, books, writing, films, sport, dance.....you could fill every day of the month with these activities - but if you're not passionate about them, if you're only doing them for the purpose of saying "I have a life. I have hobbies. I do stuff" they're only distractions. Passions, not distractions, are what give meaning to life.
Outcast
Folks, these are the symptoms of depression (from NIH) * Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood * Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism * Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness * Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex * Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down" * Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions * Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping * Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain * Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts * Restlessness, irritability * Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain Not everyone who is depressed or manic experiences every symptom. Some people experience a few symptoms, some many. Severity of symptoms varies with individuals and also varies over time. http://www.nimh.nih.gov/publicat/depression.cfm You should not be accepting your misery as a 'fact of life'. There is help out there - seek it out; you deserve it. It is possible to find joys even in a difficult life; don't settle for constant misery! Go see your doctors.
longlegzs80
I find I have no satisfaction for many things. I'm not bored though. My suggestion is to explore all your options. Art, theater, photography, hiking, playing an instrument, networking, volunteering, traveling etc. Try to do something for a period of time, it sounds in your thread that you start stuff and don't give it a chance before you get bored with it. Another thing is make a list of all the things you want to do/try....it could be within afew days, to weeks to months, but make sure you try it for a period of time to give it a chance. Maybe the activities you do don't have challenge to them. Try something that will challenge your mind that you don't judge right off the bat. Art is a great thing, especially sketching many things without judgement. Try it.
