seeing a nutritionist

Hey everyone,

Just a quick question: I'm going to be seeing a nutritionist for a) weight loss and b) overall healthy eating tips. Have any of you ever seen a nutritionist, and if so, what were your thoughts/experiences?

Thanks!

I am a registered dietitian and a licensed nutritionist with a masters' degree in clinical nutrition.

Here are some of the things you should feel comfortable asking your nutritionist/dietitian and some of things he/she should provide.

You can ask about;

- His or her credentials

- What types of patients she/he usually see? What is her/his background in?

How many years has she/he been doing this?

- What is her/his philosophy about weight management?

- Does he/she believe that meal plans should be individualized (in other words, there is no such thing as a 'one size fits all' type of diet).

- Does he/she work as part of a 'team'? In other words, does he/she consult physicians, social workers, psychiatrists, fitness consultants on a regular basis when formulating a plan of care for the client?

- If he/she recommends a supplement (vitamins, shakes) is he/she getting a 'kickback' for it or not?

- Where does he/she go for advice or information when he/she doesn't know the answer? (Any nutritionist who claims to know everything there is about all diseases or disorders is suspect)

The nutritionist/dietitian should provide

- Information in "layman's" language. In other words, they should be able to explain things in 'plain english'.

- Low-cost resources where you can obtain additional information. Nutrition information should not be expensive. They should guide you to free websites and organizations that can provide additional support

- A meal plan if you want one. However, a good dietitian/nutritionist should also be able to tailor it to your individual needs. Why should you drink two glasses of milk per day if you're lactose intolerant? You also don't need to eat beets, tofu or wheat grass juice if you don't like it. All foods have their equivalents in terms of nutrients. Your diet should be palatable and pleasant to eat.

During your session you should feel...

Respected

Like you are being listened to

Unpressured

Good luck!
