joel
damn yesterday was crazy my folks disapprove of my sis dating this guy(non serious relationship) cause hes like from pinoy-we are chinese no just that but he doesn;t fit the qualifications they require her to date men . they met workin at a seafood restaurant-co workers. they both around early 20's. funny thing is at the end my folks wree yelloing and screaming at here tellin her-if u continue seeing the low life guy they would cut her out of her inheritancce and right now require her to pay 500/mnth in rent. at the end dad and mom was like ah "you now don't be so cheap and date a guy who has no car, no good secure welling paying educated master degree job and rents his house, i mean the guy just works at a restaurant making min wage , do u want that for ur rest of ur life" "no girl is dumb as u jen, dating a low life guy from such a poor country-think think-do u want to rent and live and marry this guy for the rest of ur life" "most girls are smart no like u jen" "anyways he doesn't even speak cantonese like us and hes from a differ country-a country that is very poor and low". "well why don't you think joey her bro (myself) doesn't have a gf "----directing it at me since i didn't go to univ-just college and i also donl;t have a car and i live at home but not rent. i hope this isn;t the case for my lack of girls. they also said stuff like this men who are educated either they have a bachelor or higher, not into men who just went to some community college, or bcit . you must a stable secure financial welling paying job. something like accoutant-cga,cma, doctor, lawyer, engineer-some profession you must own your own home, renting a house is to me low-bigger the house the better is nice must be chinese and speak the language too-cantonese you must own a car-probably a nice car too new one- i will no ride the bus and date a guy-lol
ddnnee
so are you asking a question or just telling us about asians.?.? ya i agree with asian parents. They set high standards and very picky. but wouldn't it be nice to later find out your sister marries this low life pinoy and he suddenly reveals his true identity as a millionaire secret agent? jerbear
Asians parents are very picky and have high standards. The Confucian metality is both a asset and liability. Education is ranked very high on the Chinese (Asians in general?) psyche. Without and education, one can not get a good job. Family and supporting the family are some of the prime aspects. Family takes care of family. 20's and working min wage, at least he is doing something instead of stealing, ward of the state, staying home watching tv, etc... The work ethic may oneday help them get out of the pay check to pay check mentality. How many American researchers have you seen in america's research labs? Not much. I'm not talking market research but R&D.
alphamale
The Confucian metality is both a asset and liability. every "mentality" has its good and bad points... Education is ranked very high on the Chinese (Asians in general?) psyche. math & science specifically. which is what america lacks. all the american kids are too busy trying to start a band or become a hollywood movie star to worry about trivialities such as math & science. waaaay too nerdy for the avg american kid. How many American researchers have you seen in america's research labs? Not much. I'm not talking market research but R&D. I have heard so many Americans complaining there are no jobs or the jobs are being shipped overseas. thats krap. jobs based upon math & science are in large supply in the US but the american kids avoid these fields like the plague. The #1 high demand jobs are accounting right now.

Right! Or try to be a sports star. I think the US should export some of them to other countries and improve their games. Helps with the trade deficit. I have heard so many Americans complaining there are no jobs or the jobs are being shipped overseas. thats krap. jobs based upon math & science are in large supply in the US but the american kids avoid these fields like the plague. The #1 high demand jobs are accounting right now. There are really no jobs in manufacturing, even the good manufacturings jobs require advanced math and science. Asians and Europeans figured that to make money ideals have to change. Just happened the Asians had it initially but dropped the ball on a few things. Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, etc.. love them accountants, no life before period closes and fiscal year close. But FUN FUN when they do some stress relief. Other now is government jobs, 40% are eligible to retire; cushy, good retirement, good promotion, just don't get to high on the totem pole and get shot down by an elected official. Higher level ones, not the ones where you see them in person or when something is messed up; require BS & MS degrees. I think asians need right now is more social graces and get a more balanced life. Keep the ideals and get more alpha!

Yes, our education system does leave much to be desired, but let's not go around perpetuating myths and stereotypes (of either Asians or Americans). http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11541799/site/newsweek/ Interestingly, some of our "decline" in education in earlier years was a result not of degeneration of the education system but the lack of selection effects due to mass proliferation of education (i.e. our declining average SAT scores in the past decades was a result not of schools necessarily going to hell, but simply the case that unlike in olden times where only the children of the rich and the highest achievers took the SAT and went to college, everyone now is taking the SAT and going to college.) Anyways, I better stay on topic: If I remember correctly, the original poster's in Canada, not in a remote neo-Confucianist regime. My advice is to tell those who interfere with your date choices to go to hell.
