Guest
I would greatly appreciate if anyone and everyone who has any experience with Prozac comment on that experience. Could be good. Could be bad. I want to hear it all. I have been on Prozac for many years and it has helped, but I have been reading a lot of negative things about it recently. I would love to hear if anyone has had any negative long term side effects.
Outcast
Everyone's body is different so even if someone posted to say they had suffered bad long-term effects doesn't mean you will. Your best source of good information on the effects both short- and long-term of any drug is your pharmacist. Ask him for a copy of the consumer information on the drug or ask him to tell you what the Physician's Desk Reference lists as long-term effects.
Milo
Well if the powers that be would deign to allow me to respond, I'll add my two cents. Prozac (fluoxetine hydrochloride) is a second generation antidepressant, whereas lithium carbonate is a first generation drug. Lithium is very hard on the liver and users who take it for many years can have problems later on, just like taking drugs like Tylenol for long periods. Prozac was designed to be much less toxic and to have fewer side effects. There are some possible sexual side effects to taking the drug, which includes a diminished response to sexual arousal and inhibited ability to reach orgasms. Many long time users will take "drug holidays" for periods when they want to avoid this side effect. Other, even newer anti-depressants have lower incidences of sexual side effects. Prozac has been on the market since 1986 and has generally been well studied. Here's a more exhaustive discussion of the side effects as compared to placebos: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/fluoxetine_ad.htm
Guest
Thank you for your reply, but I have already done all that. What I'm looking for are comments from people who have already been on or are currently on Prozac - mainly out of curiosity. I have read a lot of negative things about the drug and I would like to hear from real people as opposed to what the "standard company line is".
