Is it weird to call my dad daddy at 22?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I am 22 years old and call my dad "papi", which means daddy in English. I still call him papi because it's a cultural thing. It's not weird to hear anyone call their dad or mom daddy/mommy (papi/mami) in Spanish. It's just something that you do when you are very close to your parents. I grew up calling him that and I am sure I will do it until I die. Many people from where my parents are from do it. Just like some people from Mexico call their parents "Ama" or "Apa". One of my friend's heard me call my dad papi and she started to mock me and say that I was no longer a kid to grow out of it. She said that I sounded like a girl that still depends on daddy to do her things. She also said that the only person I should be calling daddy is my "man." I don't feel it has anything to do with being young or depending on your parents. Simply, it's the way I was raised and what my culture has instilled in me. I don't see anything wrong with it. I do depend on my father for some things and I am sure that I will continue to do so because he is the ONLY man I can depend on BUT that does not mean I do not do things for myself. It's also gross to think that the way people perceive "papi" is in a perverted way. Am I wrong? I guess I am just venting!!!!!! THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it is fine to call your dad whatever you want... Daddy is okay... but I wouldn't call my man "daddy" it is just not appealing to me... kindof wierd...

I have two daughters who will likely always call me Daddy when they want something. One is 18 and the other is almost 30. I see nothing wrong with it.

If you lived in the south-east you'd hear both adult men and women of every age calling their father "Daddy."

I still say Daddy as well, and I am also in my early 20s. There is nothing wrong with it. I would never call my man daddy.

I am happy to hear that it's nothing out of this world, like my friend made it seem:) I was sure that I am not the only one and it's just something you do without thinking! It's good to know that people from the south-east are also customed to calling their father daddy.

tell her to blow it out her *ss. If you choose to call him 'Daddy' or 'Papi,' that's your business and yours alone. After all, it's your parents' opinion that is the bigger concern, not hers.

I still call mine Daddy, because that's how I know him, while my sibs call him Dad or Pop. Of course, when we talk about him, it's Mo this or Mo that! My mother will always be Mama to me, as well. I guess this is a southern thing, because my husband's family and my co-workers' families also address parents as Mama and Daddy (DH's grandfather was 'Granddaddy,' and his sister's grandkids call her 'Grandmama'). I think it's very endearing, just like when you hear Hispanics call their kids 'mami' or 'papi' …

calling your man 'daddy' – unless you're with your kids and are addressing him as such – is kind of creepy. Makes me think of all those redneck jokes about incest. *ick* Though I'm not averse to calling a nice looking guy 'papi chulo'!!! :D :D :D

now for my 'Papi' story:

my girlfriend from Minnesota had moved down to Corpus Christi, met a guy there who was Hispanic. Her being Yankee and never hearing the term before, kept confusing 'papi' (which the BF's mom called him whenever they visited) with 'puppy'

I think it would be wierd if i heard an adult male call his dad daddy, or mom mommy, but my wife still calls her dad daddy when she wants his help for something, and she's 41..................lol

That being said, i would be more concerned with why your friends with someone who mocks you about something that you are comfortable with and personally, she has no business talking about never mind talking negative about!

I know what you mean. I thought it was very childish for her to mock me over something like that, but I just left it at that. I told her that I di dnot see anything wrong with it and that was that.

I'm 36 years old and some times I still call my dad "daddy". I don't care what others think of it! I'm the baby of 6 and he calls me his baby girl! If you feel comfortable with it then so be it...

First of all, you shouldn't care about what your friends say to the extent where you question your own beliefs and attitudes because someone made a stupid and mean comment.

Secondly, your friend is either jealous of your closeness with your father or just jealous of you and is trying to pick any reason to knock you down.

Finally, it's a lovely thing that you're so close with both your parents. I am too and i'm lovin' it. (All resemblance to McDonald's slogan is coincidental :D ).

She sounds to me rather like her father has molested her or something, if she can relate the love for your father to anything pervert. Actually, calling your partner "daddy" is quite sick, if you ask me, and gets a totally different meaning. Why would you call your man "daddy"?

Actually I find it quite weird when people call their moms "mother." It speaks of a lack closeness, I think.

I don't know many women in the South who don't call their father "Daddy", even women in their sixties refer to him as "Daddy". I call my uncle "Daddy". I only call my boyfriend "Daddy" in reference to the cats or the dog, like "Daddy is trying to sleep, please stop meowing and running up and down the stairs" or "Daddy is going to take you to park, are you excited?" that sort of thing. I am "The Momma". Like "The Godfather", only scarier... :)
