MusicWoman
So, I have this professor at school who lost 100 pounds in 6 months. Basically, he started running everywhere he had to go and stopped eating. (well, he said he ate a boiled onion every day with soy sauce) Basically, he was kinda anorexic. Now that hes lost the weight he just changed his lifestyle and eats whatever he wants to in moderation. My question is, what exactly are the health risks to not eating very much just to loose the weight you know you need to loose? He did this over 10 years ago, and hes in good health now. He wasn't reccomending doing this, but he was talking about the science and math involved in calorie counting since we someone got onto a discussion over natural foods vs processed foods. He was saying that is was impossible (unless due to medical condition) to not loose weight if you just don't eat more calories than you burn in a day...that really if the foods are natural vs foods that are artifical...there is no difference between the two if the calories are the same. What do you think?

He was saying that is was impossible (unless due to medical condition) to not loose weight if you just don't eat more calories than you burn in a day...that really if the foods are natural vs foods that are artifical...there is no difference between the two if the calories are the same. What do you think? A calorie is a calorie and that is all that your body knows. If person A. ate 1,200 calories of vegetables and person B ate 1,200 of brownies each day. Both would lose weight no matter what form the food is. 1,200 calories is a standard for a woman to never drop below 1,200 if you plan not to eat all that much. I think it is 1,400 for men. The most common formula to calorie counting for a woman is 10 X what you weigh ________ and the answer you get is how much your body needs to run on to keep those same pounds. Let's say you are 200 Lbs. 10 X 200 = 2190. You would have to consume 2190 calories to stay in the 200 range. Let's say you want to lose weight. You would need to minus 500 calories from 2190 to make a 3500 calorie deficit per week to lose one pound! That would mean 2190 - 500 = 1690 calories. You would have to only consume 1,690 to lose one pound in 7 days. Each time you lose a pound you have to redue the formula to lose weight. As for your professor. Yes it was possible for him to lose 100 lbs in 6 months with out having too much problems with the health factor because in that time frame he was losing 2.6 Lbs per week. According to most weight loss doctors they will tell you that losing from 1 to 2 lbs a week is a healthy limit anything over 2lbs a week becomes questionable and should not be done with out doctor’s guidance. Your professor was just over 1/2 lbs of the guide lines. I question on just eating what you said he ate though. There is another formula out there that I believe is wrote by Calorie Queen and according to it they say if there is a weight number you like to be at to find out how many calories you need to consume to be at that weight. Let's say a person wants to be at 140 and let’s say 1,400 calories is what you need to consume to be at 140. So here you are at 200 Lbs consuming 1,400 calories until you reach 140. But I have heard that their formula is different from 10X the weight you like to be at. I thought I heard the formula being 12 X the weight you wish to be at. ( I have heard people having success with this book) the only problem I have with calorie queen is I have heard complaints when people try’s to lose weight calorie counting that some people hit what they call platues. In other words you do everything by the book but for some reason for that week you did not drop the pound or two. I keep hearing about our bodies recognizing to go into starvation mode and saving fat? That is something to look into. I like to know if this is a myth or not because at this point this just doesn’t sound right to me. I hear people jump starting their weight loss by bringing up their calorie or dropping it to get their body to reset in losing weight again because they believe that their body can recognize that they stay on the same amount of calories so some people will zig zag their calories. You have to wonder if this is really necessary.
climbergirl
I never try to imitate what a man does because they really are physiologically so much different. The thing about no food intake is that your metabolism slows down to preserve energy (when in starvation mode). Never a good idea. Truly, for women it is better to be patient and consistant. westernxer
Don't forget that your professor also included exercise in his routine.
TerriSoDarey
okay I screw that piece of math up. I used that calculations on the weight of 219 insted of 200lbs. ....... of course this thing won't let me re edit the math in my original message. Which sucks. Price I pay for having to many windows open. ball parking calories!!!! Got to love math. AAGGGGHH
RecordProducer
Not eating for a long time damages your health. You don't know your predispositions vs. his. Some people smoke, drink, eat a lot, don't exercise and live long lives. Some get strokes or heart attacks from only one of those "goodies." I am prone to diabetes considering my family's medical history so I MUST pay attention to what I eat. Other people can eat junk their whole lives and stay healthy. Besides, it's very hard to not eat and be hungry. I started going to the gym 10 days ago 3 times a week. I do both weights and cardio. My trainer put me on a diet that's based on proteins. I might start a post about it in a month if everything works fine for me. I feel no hunger and I consume no more than 1,200 calories a day. I am 5'6" tall and weigh 135 lbs. My goal is to lose 10-15 lbs and tighten up my body. This is my diet: 1. One yellow and 4 whites, a slice of low-fat cheese, a cup of skimmed milk 2. Protein shake (one scoop with skimmed milk) 3. 4 oz. of tuna drained from the sodium, two slices of light wheat bread with a little bit of salad and low-calorie dressing 4. One chicken breast (skinless and boneless) and 1/2 cup of veggies or brown rice. Water and vitamins too. He told me to stick to this diet for 30 days and he guarantees that I will lose minimum 10-12 lbs if I do with the regular exercise at the gym.
Outcast
It is much much *MUCH* better for your health - and easier in the long run - to make gradual changes to your diet. You can start exercising today, however and that will begin to burn calories. If you put muscle on by lifting weights, you'll burn more calories. But in terms of eating, change your diet until you are eating healthily all the time. Drastic diets can do you damage and they don't solve the problem of a lifetime of poor habits. OTOH, changing your habits permanently will prevent you from rebound gaining.

This guy told you to eat this exact same meal every day? Geez after a month of that I would never eat Tuna or Chicken again. Surely he gave you some sort of variety.... ? Clair
Not eating right is very damaging for health. I heard of one man who was eating one piece of bread every day. He ended up with epilepsy. Your body needs nutrition for functioning, that means all the necessary vitamins, minerals and other substances, found in different foods. The other thing I don't agree with is that a calorie is a calorie, no matter what type of food it is. One gram of carbohydrates will hold 3 grams of water in your body, thus making you gain weight. That's what Atkin's diet is based on. You can eat a lot of fiber, protein and fat and still lose weight. The only thing you need to limit is carbohydrates.
