Since, I asked this chick if she would like to go for a coffee (she agreed and said when college starts...) I have been noticing weird behaviours on msn..

Here is an example of the event log of her actions a few nights ago..

The whole time i was appearing offline until later on in the night

[23/04/2006 | 06:18:51 PM] Sarah( ) - Contact appears to be idle

[23/04/2006 | 06:20:16 PM] Sarah( ) - Contact is now online

[23/04/2006 | 06:20:31 PM] Sarah( ) - Contact is now offline

[23/04/2006 | 08:03:10 PM] Sarah( ) - Contact is now online

[23/04/2006 | 08:03:22 PM] Sarah( ) - Contact is now offline

[23/04/2006 | 08:35:07 PM] Sarah( ) - Contact is now online

[23/04/2006 | 08:42:42 PM] Sarah( ) - Contact is now offline

[23/04/2006 | 08:57:14 PM] Sarah( ) - Contact is now online

[23/04/2006 | 09:00:56 PM] (current user) - Your status has been changed to: Online

[23/04/2006 | 09:02:22 PM] Sarah( ) - Contact is now offline

After, i appeared onlline at 9pm, she left at 9:02 and never came online again...

I am wondering whether this is influenced by me or what? She has not been blocking me (i did a block check..) so what gives?? If your are going to stay on MSN why would you come online several times for less than 5 mins, then when i come online not appear again??

Any ideas?

I have a girl that I talk to do that.. I have always thought it was weird too.. but I think it is like knocking on your door without contacting you..

Kinda just trying to let you know she is there without saying Hi so you can say Hi first..

There is no way to know if you are the one she is trying to signal.. but you could be.. next time just say Hi to her

Maybe she was having computer problems???

I doubt it...

why would she change her status to busy then 2 minutes later change it back to online again then back to offline all in 5 minutes..

(unless she is installing software, i doubt this is the case)

she is like online, then offline all in under 1 minute... i mean wtf

People Are Reading This Thread But Not Commenting

Lol! Well 261 people read my thread and only 14 replies - half of which were me so don't worry!

If you want my comment, which you know you do! :bunny:

I've had people do that before to me as well. Note that Block checkers don't always work. We tested them a few times and they suck. In the old days people used to sign on to Messenger then put themselves offline. My computer used to auto log me in and I'd change my status. The latest Messenger allows you to chose your sign in status as appear offline.

I'd say that maybe she isn't technical enough/or bothered to change her setting to offline. I don't see why she'd hide from you by logging in then off because she could just block you or appear offline and check if you are online. My friend had her Messenger keep signing her on and off and she wasn't even on her machine - that was a technical fault. Other people on wireless with bad signals have the same issue. Different friend used to log online and I'd start to talk to them. No reply. 5 minutes later the message would bounce and then they'd go offline. Totally not their fault they didn't even know it was happening.

It's what we in the IT field call being "Micro-shafted"

Do you have any other way of contacting her and have you tried? IMHO Messenger isn't the best way to communicate... people just seem so fake over it. I mean you could be really upset and still act normal/happy online.

I have two computers at my house sitting right next to each other. My daughter stays logged in on MSN 24/7 on one. I am always noticing certain friends logging in one minute...logging out the next...log in ... log out... I end up just shutting it down.

Honestly don't know what's causing this phenomenon.

By the way, I wouldn't pay so much attention to her online activity.

The guessing will drive you nuts! :o

I have a few friends who this happens to. Usually its a dodgy connection. In most cases its also because their wi-fi connections are dodgy and keep losing connection.

There is also a case for her wanting your attention I have known people who do this so that you talk to them since they're name keeps popping in and out - basically like a big flag saying talk to me!!!

I hate people who do that >.<, If you want to talk that much say hello, I'm not psychic :D

Bad connection?

Um, maybe she was just checking her email for something and could stay online to chat?

Why do you care?

Yep I'd agree with others. When my WI-FI connection is playing up I'll be logging in and out without always noticing.. it's annoying!!

Turn off the microwave when using wifi.

Make sure the cup holder is not being used while the computer is on.

Is it plugged in?

or more plausible situations:

wifi is acting up

computer is acting up as in flaky

network bandwidth is being consumed (downloading, spyware, whatever)

messenger is just flaky

she is turning it on and off

playing with the settings

"knocking"

Does this girl have your phone number? If this msn thing is trippin' you out, maybe just ask her to call you, or if you can phone her to make the arrangements.

There are a lot of reasons her msn status might change... my connection has been horrible over the last couple months and is constantly signing me out and back in. Maybe she has her computer set up to auto sign in and when she boots up her computer, she decides she doesn't feel like chatting, so she shuts down msn. Maybe there is someone else she is avoiding....

I remeber when I was still in school and I had the day off and was on msn. My friend was at school but her msn kept signing her in and out. It drove me nuts. Just computers misbehaving as per usual. Never working when you want them to.

Like I said "Micro-shafted" I hate Wireless Internet its so unreliable!

My neighbors were fiddling with their settings, one even changed their SSID to match mine.

What I did on my end was change the antennas to double the range (3db to 7db) and increased the power output (24 to 80mw) Went from 5% to 98% signal strength.

Something to consider for those "micro-shafted" and have AP's.

Any computer store sells the booster antennae and having 2 wireless networks setup with the same ssid that are not bridged causes connection issues

yes, up to 1 watt; before the FCC shows up.

The changes are under 1 watt ;)

My friend, I seem to have a similar type of friend as you do. It seems you will never know where they stand, as there is always some mysterious 'distance' and she behaves funny on MSN.

I had that problem, and it touched a nerve with me. I called her cell phone demanding an explanation within 24 hours and confirmed by MSN that she wanted to continue going out with me and no 'rejection' was meant by that. She complained that I read too much into things.

If you think you've got a wierd girl, this one sends pictures of her guy friends on her avatar, and one of them right besides her, while saying, whenever pressed, she is interested in going out with me again. Since I"m busy myself with my own life, and in Real-Estate, I have no way of pressing her again since technically I cant even put up a date until I have some clear air next week. It's a wierd set-up.

My theory is this. These girls probably have a few contacts on their MSN, and to avoid confusion, they will put an offline, or some other unavailable status on it, while in reality, they are talking with someone else, or doing something else. They probably have a few guy friends, are not really interested in settling down in a relationship with anyone, and who knows.

That's just the thing. If you like an attractive or even semi-attractive girl, they are like a beehive always having some guy in the background. The plus for this is, well, you are free to flirt or interact with anyone you want, so I dont think you can take these people too seriously. You simply have to put things into perspective.

I've dismissed the girl. She sent pictures of herself and some guy friend with her together, both together smiling for the camera, when I was chatting with her Sunday evening, and found that extremely rude and offensive.

If she talks to me again, fine, but I'm never going to initiate anything with her again.
