But seriously. I'm pretty stoked. I'm up to 100 lbs on calves! I did 6 sets of 15!!! I did 50 on squats today. I'm really pleased with my progress. I've been at it about a month and am finally beginning to see the effects! Yay! I'm about to start incorporating cardio in more and should really start to see results.

Brag on!! I like to read what works.....(esp. for women).

However, reps tone, sets usually bulk. Which are you going for?

That's a myth. Women are genetically programmed for a certain body type. In order to "bulk" you have to either have a bulky body type or take steroids to change the biochemical makeup of your body.

I will not be bulky. I have done this before, I never really let it go completely, I just slacked off and got a little soft.

Jesus Christ Lady, I feel like I've been disagreeing with you all day!

Really, no myth. Sets entail higher weights/ less lifts to build bulk and strength, reps entail lower weights/ more lifts to build strength.

I'm petite and while doing sets I got lots of comments inquiring if I was in a body building contest.

I'm not talking out my ass........I've been doing this for ~20 years.

I'm not talking out of my ass either. It's not just that three trainers and countless articles have told me this. (I know the articles don't mean much, they're all from fitness mags that I don't really trust. Always trying to sell you something, ya know?) It's also because I have done high reps with low weight and fewer reps with higher weight and gotten the same results. Every time. I don't bulk up. I'm not little, I've always been muscular, even when I was a swimmer I had cut biceps and quads and broad shoulders. Other people might bulk up, but I just don't.

This is true. E.g. the same exercise might make men's arms big, but women's thin.

Is that YOU in your avatar? :)

 Nice one GC!! I was expecting a rant.....!! :o

Glad you're getting to see some results. I've been using a personal trainer (I don't really need one) to help me with my running, and I'm really starting to see an improvement. I'm quite stoked about that! I never thought I could do it!

Well, if we're allowed to brag on here about our workouts, I finally held Parivrta Parsvakonasana for like 5 minutes yesterday without falling over. I'm not sure I spelled that right. Revolved side angle pose.

I have no idea what that is, but it sounds awesome. 5 minutes is forever! I'm going to google that to see what it is.

Sadly, it was not me. :( My BF went to a baseball game with his friends and didn't get home until almost 1. But someone must have, who was it???

I hope it wasn't that friend of yours who is supported by her husband who smokes too much weed and does too much coke to work in a daycare. I would be even more jealous of her and then my head might explode.

Just don't think about it. She has a sex swing in her house. I know because she told one of my prissiest friends at my birthday party. Classy, huh? She'd known her for about 15 minutes...

Romeo joins the fray... he's in a scrappy mood today

Yes, myth. First, catgirl is right to say that genes are the main determining influence, more than the rep/set configuration. Second, to the extent that reps and sets do influence, you're correct about high/low reps, but not on sets - bulk peaks at 1-3 sets.... 6 sets goes more towards tone.

I'm not talking out my ass........I've been doing this for ~20 years.

That sounds about right... your gym knowledge is about 20 years out of date - science has made a lot of impact on training since then.

Wow...reading this I originally thought ...good for you CatGirl...However after seeing how climbergirl has been slammed for her post, which I assume was heartfelt and voicing her knowledge on this subject seemed valid makes me realize..LS definately has there little clicks.. and if you are not one of the ACCEPTED ONES in this forum then prepare to be flamed...

very immature if you ask me... but I guess that doesn't matter anyway...I thought this forum was to give advice to others in a helpful way but I guess that was wrong also....flame on!

I think Praline would be a good stripper name.

I don't know if it's really about cliques. What I saw that happened here is, I came on here just to express something I was happy and proud about. Climbergirl starts telling me that what I'm doing in the gym is wrong. Now, it is an advice forum, so you have to expect that. So, I tell her that based on my experience it will be fine. Then she says she's not talking out of her ass and knows better than me. What? How can she say she knows better than me when she doesn't know how much I know? The "20 years" comment was harsh, I agree. But when I come on here and slam someone and my info is off, you bet your ass I get flamed for it. That's the way it goes.
