any health professionals out there?

Recommended Posts

Over the weekend, I fell and broke my 5th metatarsal and sprained my ankle. THe bone was not displaced, so no resetting was required. I went to the ER, but don't see a need to follow-up with an orthopaedist.

However, my foot is blue! Some of it is bruising, but some is obviously blood pooling in my foot. It is less blue when I get up in the morning, and more blue when in the evening. And it is on the top of my foot, and into my toes.

How concerned should I be? Is this normal? The major concerns are clotting, obviously.

Any advice would be appreciated.

This might be rude, but I'm going to bump this post to keep it at the top of today's posts...

The reason is to see if compartment syndrome has occured, to see if you are having any additional problems and full function of your foot! Brusing is not unusual and it peeks by the 3rd day your foot begins to change colors and the swelling will become less. Your foot turning blue is from lack of blood returning up the leg. The brusing is normal but Not sure as to why your foot is turning blue?? I definatley would see the doctor who you are under treatment for the injury! Place heat on it for a few days to assist in the body reabsorbing the blood in the tissues.

Yes by all means go to the follow up appointment!

The doctors do the follow ups for a reason and not just to take your money!

Did they put a cast on your foot?

They did for me, when I suffered a hairline fracture of the same metatarsal. My foot was so swollen the first couple days, but I kept icing it until the black and blue went away. At first the docs said it was just a sprain... they didn't even see the fracture until after the swelling went down.

You shouldn't be walking on it, not until you see an orthopedist. It usually takes 5-6 weeks for it to heal, with a cast.

My ankle took much longer. Like you, I sprained mine at the same time, and it's still not 100 percent. The other one is worse... sports has killed my body.

No- I didn't get a cast. They gave me one of those ankle braces and a soft boot to wear. I bought some crutches off craigslist.

It really isn't painful. Obviously, I can't put my full weight on it, especially if I don't have the brace on or if I have been sitting for some time.

I got x-rays in the ER...so they saw the break then. I was a little loopy from the drugs they gave me when they released me, so I don't exactly remember the discharge instructions. My discharge papers say weight-bearing as tolerated.

Not walking is not an option. I'm in school. And I have to work. I realize that I'm probably screwing myself with recovery and susceptibilty to future injury, but it's one of those things.

They cast your foot for a hairline? How long did it take for the swelling/bruising to subside? This happened Sunday morning.

Mine happened ten years ago... back then they put you in a cast that went up to the knee. Swelling went down after a couple days but the bruising took longer. Now I have a slight bump on the edge of my foot, where the break has calcified. It still tingles when I rub my finger across the top... weird. Sometimes I feel a sharp pain when I step, but it's nothing to worry about. Just one of those chronic things.

Just listen to the doc's advice and keep that boot on when you're not in bed. Hope you don't have to walk too far. Maybe you can get a bus pass or something.

Normally I would delete this thread but I'll just close it for now.

It is absolutely insane (no personal attack intended) to ask for medical information on an Internet romance forum composed of all kinds of people from diverse backgrounds and who are NOT medical professionals for the most part.

You need to seek professional consultation from a licensed medical doctor who can examine you in person.

Your health and your life are far more important than to entrust them in a forum composed of hundreds of anonymous, untrained people who have no malpractice insurance.
