Pill addictions

Hey I posted something about this in another forum but it was too long & it's more appropriate here so I'll recap.

My husband has a problem with pills- clonazepam. The user blind otter had pointed out how dangerous the coming off of these pills can be. I don't think that he's really in danger of that because it's been a while since he has taken them every day. He cut back a lot since we've been together. His pattern now is he picks up his prescription (of 90 pills, he cut back from 120 about 6 months ago), takes them within a few days, and is sober for a week or two. Then he will bum some from a friend of his (whole other issue but let's just say I'm not a big fan of this woman) and go on another bienge of a few days.

 

So on the whole I normally have a sober husband for almost 3 weeks out of the month, but the days when he is not sober are a real bitch. You know how people on pills are, grumpy, unaffectionate, uninterested in sex, rude, etc. He might go on and on about an exgirlfriend, that sort of thing; once he hurt my feelings because he showed me xxx pics he took with someone else.

So I don't know if you'd say he's addicted but its something he likes for fun and I don't think he's willing to taper off completely. We've talked about it before; a year ago I asked him what he saw his pill habit being like in a year b/c I've been up front that it bothers me. He said he'd be taking them very rarely or not at all. Of course by now it's been a year, and while I've seen some change it's not what I was promised.

 

Am I over-reacting? I'm not the best at talking about these things, especially when the other person is so uber-sensitive about it. All I know is when he gets his pills, or has his friend over, I'm automatically bracing myself for a very unpleasant few days and it really is depressing.

On the other hand he's grown and functional and I don't believe in giving ultimatums. Maybe I just don't know how to talk to him about it? How would you guys address something like this, what should I be saying?
