how far is too far?

I am having problems letting go of a very abusive man who I am married to but he isn't abusive toward me but toward the kids I have that are his. I am not sure how much longer I can put up with anger he makes me feel for him when he hits a 2yro and a 5yro. He has a very bad temper with stupid stuff like the kids won't keep the room picked up simple kid stuff. I have been put in a corner and need help out, my own mother called and told his parents that I have got a form of schizophrenia that runs in the family. I take meds when I have insurance for the cost of it. But right now if I leave because only one incident has been recorded from the law, he says he can prove i'm unstable enough to get custody of the kids. I have a full time job and am very stable in my line of work.
