Hi, I'm moving out of my house for the first time, I'll be quite honest I am so scared! Beyond that, I don't know what to do about myself, I'm a packrat and I don't know how to get rid of my stuff and I don't know what I really need, ya know? I'll be moving to Europe so itsnot like i can just drive home if i need something...any advice, thanks~!

It costs a TON of money to take stuff to Europe. Remember, Europe is every bit as modern (in many cases more so) as North America so you should be able to buy everything you need there - probably for cheaper than it would be to take.

Divide your house into sections and then clean out each section. Make the sections small enough that they don't seem overwhelming but be sure to schedule all the cleaning to get done in plenty of time before you leave.

Then get five boxes. Label one 'toss' for stuff that can't be used by anybody because it's too old or wrecked. Label one 'give' for good stuff to give away to charities. Another is 'recycle' for stuff to take to recycle depots. Then mark one 'sale' and plan to have a garage sale. Finally, label a small box 'keep' - only if you can store it with family or friends. That box will contain only the most irreplacable memories. Remember that if you have some mementos that are bulky to store, you can always take a photo of them and keep the photo to remember the things by.

Then be extremely strict with yourself in getting rid of things. In the meantime, do a website with photos of all your furniture and then take out an ad in the paper and put the website in it with an email address where people interested in buying the stuff can contact you.

Packrat and moving to Europe don't mix, so

unless you have some place for storage, you're going

to have to get rid of A LOT of stuff.

It's easy for me, i'm not a packrat, but my brother is and

he has storage and places for his stuff all over, at our parents,

at his wife's parents, it's too much!!

Take what you really need to survive and what you can

live without and get rid of the rest. You can always buy

new stuff down the road. But don't throw out any Baseball

card collections.:p

You know, when I first moved to southern Cali with my dad, I only had room to take one box of stuff... ONE BOX!! I had to leave everything and only take essentuals. I thought I was going to die, but once I got there, I honestly couldn't remember a thing I was missing!! It was so liberating in a sense!! I am somewhat of a packrat myself. Go through your stuff one thing at a time, and ask yourself "is this just something I have to have?" If not, chunk it, or place it in a box and keep it at your parents house, or storage.
