Thunder+Lightening Phobia

I just moved to the mid west recently from the west. The thunder and lightening here especially at night time freaks me out something terrible. I get panicked and phobic and want to hide in the closet like a little kid. Sometimes I try to watch dvds or blast music but it is so loud and so creepy it just distracts me. It sounds like bombs falling over my home, Im not use to this and freaking out and everyone acts like Im weird or something because of it. My boyfriend when hes here with me Im fine, i feel safe and happy but he works graveyard shift sometimes and I cant have him over those nights. Im thinking of getting myself a Cat to keep me company. Anybody have any suggestions (pls no sarcasm lol) how u dealt with severe weather, etc.?

You need to go talk to a therapist who specializes in dealing with phobia's. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.

I suffer from anxiety, so this type of therapy has worked well with me. Many people with phobia's learn how to 'retrain' the brain into thinking more positively, learning how to control those fears, and understand them. So much of the fears we have is all learned behaviour, so it can be undone. Just takes time and some hard work to change your ways of thinking and reacting.

What is it that you're scared of? Do a list for yourself. Write down all the bad things that you "think" could happen. Including, how you physically feel while there is a storm going on.

After a storm passes, get that list out again, read it and ask yourself - DID any of the bad stuff happen that I was scared of?? 9/10 those fears are ALL manifested in our minds, which just makes it all worse.

Hope this helps.

Pick your cat carefully...a lot of felines are equally afraid of lightening and thunder, no sarcasm intended.

This type of phobia is common among children but most grow out of it when they realize lightening and thunder are of no consequence unless there is a direct hit...right on top of your head. Chances are better you'll get elected President than get struck by lightening.
