Alrighty, a bit of background I guess..

Currently I've been working at my job for the past 6 months. It's a bowling alley, obviously part-time while I'm in school. Summer is their off season. I talked to my manager waaaay before and was told that during the summer I'd be able to get a bunch of hours, most likely they would not be hiring.

So, I get this letter from school; telling me that tuition is due July 4th... SH*T I totally don't have enough money ($1,500)!!

I talk to my manager, tell him the situation and ask him for as many hours in the next 2 weeks as humanly possible. I mentioned I was willing to work bar, customer service, kitchen.. doing doubles, splits and weekends. He said he'd take it into consideration and try to work something out. Next thing I know, looking at the schedule.. BAM 3 three hour shifts, and a 6 on the day that i requested that I absolutely needed off.  only 14.5 hours paid.

FUMING.. I go and talk to the general manager. I've had tickets to go see this show on Friday for months with my bf. That's why I asked for it off TWICE, I even highlighted it... It's my longest shift, and there is NO WAY, that I can just not work it I needed the hours. I was SOOO stuck. GM, tells me to talk to the Manager. I did. I feel like an idiot. I ended up bawling my eyes out to him, after he told me that since 2 fulltimers left, and they had to hire 3 more.. there would be no extra hours available, since they don't qualify for vacation yet. F*CK!! He recommends that I perhaps look for a different job if I'm in need of so many hours. I did just that.

I sent my resume to about 8 different places. Within a matter of hours, I got 2 calls, and 1 interview. The first place didn't hire students. The next day I had an interview at 1. I go to the interview, it takes 3.5 hours. After the testing, I'm told that I did fantastic, and I'd be great for the position. It's 9-5, mon-fri, $10/hr plus commissions. It's about 25 more hours than I'm currently getting, plus and extra $1.50 pay an hour.

So, I go to give heads up to the bowling alley. They tell me, "Oh, we have done the schedule for the next 4 weeks..." I take a look at the tentative schedule.. It's 9-5, 6 days a week, plus some nights in the bar. They also told me that I'm due for a my raise mid July, and if I want, I'm able to work kitchen almost fulltime (5:30-12am) as well. I would have to work weekends, but only during the daytime, and it would be easy to get some time off. I could also continue working throughout the school year, where as the other job, I'd have to find something else once school started.

So now, I'm stuck. I could take fulltime, mon-fri, with $1.50 more... or fulltime, and then some, for $1.50 less and keep the job while at school.

I have no idea what to do. I always said that I'd rather just work this job, all throughout the school year and such. It looks awesome on the resume, and with lots of different areas to get experience in.. aka, the bar.

WHAT DO I DO!?

The old bowling alley or frier dilemma.

That's a tough one that's going to be the calling card on your resume for the rest of your life so you'd better choose wisely.

I suggest a coin.

What kind of commissions? Is the product an easy sell? Do people regularly make their targets or do lots of people get fired for missing targets? How much do you get paid per commission?

Could be the new job is one of those outfits that push people to sell sell sell and drop you fast if you don't produce.

the quota is 7 sales/day.. i got this through an employment agency, so i don't know if it's achievable or not.. apparently i'd be selling ATM/Debit machines.. to who? businesses I'd assume..from what i understoon it was $100 for an ATM, and $50 for a debit... but it doesn't really make sense, especially if you're suppose to sell 7 a day.. plus the hourly wage. i'll be sure to verify that once my agent calls me back.

at the bowling alley.. it's really nothing spectacular, obviously, but working two year as opposed to 1 month at a job looks soooo much nicer. i know i had many comments about the 1 month telemarketing job i had on my resume. i only put it on there, cuz it showed that i did telemarketing :\ also, during the fall, i'm able to get more hours... with the leagues and stuff, it's MUCH busier! other than the manager, i have the highest seniority there. i just need a better title than a part timer.. they won't promote me to anything higher b/c i'm going back to school though.

on another note, i did apply for a scholarship and a tuition bursary today!

You mean putting the actual cash dispensing machines in businesses or do you mean getting them to sign up to let people pay using debit? If it's putting actual cash dispenser-type ATM machines in, that might be iffy. Employment agencies just want to place you. They get paid for the placement.

Is it a big company? Can you Google it and research it to see how well they're doing? If you can make. And you say you could earn an extra $700. a day if you place 7 machines? Something doesn't sound right so I'd check it out thoroughly.

cool!!!

Now regarding the job between selling with commission or bowling alley.

I suggest the bowling alley for the following reasons:

  • Selling ATMS only goes so far, market saturation and most places already have ATMs in them. Hard market to be in.
  • Easier to lease than sell ATM's
  • Commissions are not guarantees. 1 month tenure is really not worth it.
  • Bowling alley is more stable and you will still have a job during school
  • Commission sales is not an easy job especially when you are not close to graduation, not a good resume builder for customer service, sales, account management skills.
  • No long term value selling ATM's

 i am starting to think about staying at the bowling alley now. they also offered me a leave during August since it won't be too busy.. i was talking to my mom  and she said it wouldn't be a bad idea to take the leave work for the other place, make some cash selling the atms... haha and quit, going back to the bowling alley. the only thing i'd be guarenteed right now at the alley, would be to call a couple thousand league bowlers, and bar work. so even if i wasn't able to manage the 7 sales a day, i'd still get my hourly wage for a month and call er quits.

oh ya, and this new company is not big at all. there are only 18 employees in total.
