Is my boyfriend depressed??

Recommended Posts

Hello all! I am so confused because of how my boyfriend is acting. He just seems so down-hearted after almost a year together. He is distancing himself from everyone! Including, but not limited to me! I am so hurt by this because his "depression" (as I am calling it) has caused us to have to take a break from each other. He is always so sad looking and tends to be clinging to his mother. My boyfriend is 17 and has been through so much in his life. He has a serious heart condition and has gone through numerous surgeries to save his life. I have been told that many people who have a handicap of some sort tend to go into depression after battling with the illness. I just don't know what else to do. I accept his decision to take a break right now and I am being very patient, but I looked up symptoms of depression and he has most if not all of them. I am just awestruck by this and I am desperately hoping he will pull through. There is nothing else I can do. Any ideas on this matter? Has anyone ever been in a situation like this?

speaking from personal experience since i was depressed for sometime, the best way to deal with depression is to find help. I was personally in a psychiatric hospital for some time, and it was seriously the most enlightening experience of my life.

Seeking professional help could also give him the opportunity to find medicine that would be suitable for his particular condition.

So my advice is to talk to him or his parents about some kind of help if he really is depressed as u say he is

I say talk to people who have the power to get him help. Telling someone they are depressed isn't going to make them realize it, it's difficult becaus ethe reality is that only they can get help when they become absolutely aware of their problem. Having his parents find help for him is a small step, but it's still up to him to become aware and accept the fact.

I've been there, it's really hard on all parties. If you care about him, when he becomes aware, be encouraging and constructive. That may help you both heal.

Well, his mother and I are pretty close. I want to talk to her, but I am not sure when I can. I am not able to go to his house or anything. I am just so bewildered, because he is just not the same guy I fell in love with. This is so upsetting, because he has just about pushed me out of the picture. He still calls me and talks to me or talks on the internet, but I can still sense the sadness and frustration in his voice. This is so heartbreaking for me and him as well. He had a terrible breakdown when he requested that we take a break from each other. I don't even know if his mother would consider even getting him help. I am hoping that, since we are out of school for the summer, that he will be less stressed and have time to maybe recover a little on his own. I just don't know what to do....there is nothing else I really can do. I just keep praying and having faith in the best to come.
