KittenMoon
Does anyone here bellydance? How do you like it? I have been contemplating taking a class, partially for fitness, partially because I have always been insecure about my body. Around here I've seen this local bellydancing troupe several times, and regardless of their bodies, they seem so confident! And we're talking women in their 70s, women who are very overweight, etc. I'm always impressed!
blind_otter
I bellydanced semiprofessionally for 3 years when I was younger. I had done ballet for 14 years as a child, and tap and jazz dance. I got out of ballet and wanted to get into some form of dance that allowed for more personal interpretation and creativity (IMO, anyways). I also taught some bellydance. I loved it and if I could find a troupe that I liked (all the ones I know of here are pretty catty and bitchy) I would do it again. It does increase your body confidence substantially and I love the way my muscles developed. You learn how to control and isolate various muscle groups, and you use your stomach muscles in ways that people just normally don't. I knew one lady who danced professinally in egypt who could roll a roll of quarters down her belly without using her hands because the muscles were so flexible and strong. The costumes are a bit cheesy so I started making my own. My older sister (before her 3 kids) used to dance with me and we had a sister act, so all the choreography I know is for two people. But I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Pink Amulet
I used to teach some classes at a local dancing school. While I taught mostly street funk/jazz ballet classes, I always loved jumping in on the belly dancing classes when I was done! You will LOVE IT. It is so sensual, and the movement you tap in to makes you feel so sexy. Hip movement is something once taught- never forgetton... your future/current sexual partners will thank you for it! quankanne
go for it – it'll be the most fun you've ever had because you become more aware of your body and what it can do. And it's just so damned sexy to watch (I'm thinking Shakira videos). Hell, even us spastic, double-left-footed folks can do the simpler steps and feel graceful! I took it for several months as an exercise class and really enjoyed it. We had older women, younger women, women who were in incredibly good shape and had no trouble dancing, and women who were less healthy and less sure-footed, but everyone seemed to enjoy it. I'd love to take it up again, it was a great stress releaser for me.

I'm a bit of a oceans ebb and flow already with my movements. Go for it. I would if I got the drive to do it. I need to get the desire and urge to get up and do it. (Hmmm , Idea:confused: 'note to self--think about and look into getting involved with a weekend dancing class ex: bellydancing.)
sugarplum
I once bought a video on this because I was interested. For various reasons, its collecting dust and it has not been played yet. I mean it was so long ago that its on VHS. Reading this thread has me wanting to pop that thing in the VCR, finally - if it still works!
giggless
It's funny that I came across this thread right now...because I was just getting ready to leave for my belly dancing class! I have only been doing it for few months, but I just LOVE it!
blind_otter
Suhaila Salimpour was my favorite bellydancer. Not only is she super hot, she's a very very talented dancer and has some of the best isolations I've ever seen. She has some videos with a few of her older choreographies on it, and a dance studio in CA I think, and she does workshops as well. She has a website too, but I don't think I can post it. I never know about these things. Anyways PM me for a link if you're interested. Margaret Cho has a line of bellydance belts/ hipwear in the shopping area. I kid you not. Outcast
It's definitely on my list of things to do one of these days. Which is a long list but anyhoo. I think it would be great for all those ... um... necessary ... muscles

I think it would be great for all those ... um... necessary ... muscles Alas, I wish those muscles were more necessary at the moment.... I've always wanted to try it, so I probably will. It's a little bittersweet at the moment, as my ex was part Lebanese and if we had gotten married, I would have had a legitimate reason to have belly dancers entertaining at the wedding reception. It's something I would like to get back to also and promised myself I would make the class tonight but didn't go :( It's probably the only form of exercise that I am not looking at the clock to see if it's almost time to stop. Plus, you feel so sensual and good about yourself. Go...what do you have to lose? PS...I even got a few of those shimmy hip scarves too.
